So a preemptive match postponement is not allowed?

It’s up to the ref, if he believes the forecast may mean starting the game could result in it not finishing, then they can call it off. It could be just about ok right now, but they might decide it’s not going to be anywhere near playable at 3/4/4.45pm.

Today’s Sky Bet League One match against Tranmere Rovers at the Crown Oil Arena has been postponed.

The fourth official of today's game has taken into account the height of the water table under the pitch, the surface water on the pitch from the rain already today and the forecast of Storm Dennis, and has therefore decided to call the game off.

A rearranged date for the game will be announced in due course.

Tickets already purchased will be valid for the rearranged date or can be refunded in full. Dale fans can do this at the RAFC Ticket Office, whilst Tranmere supporters must contact their own club’s Ticket Office.

Rochdale AFC apologises to all supporters for any inconvenience caused, but unfortunately the weather conditions have proved too extreme for the pitch.

“the height of the water table under the pitch”

That’s what stands out. We need clarity and total transparency around what work is planned in the summer to address the problem. Fully expect this on Monday evening at the forum.

Edit: this is not a criticism of today’s postponement. Even with a great pitch there would have been a doubt today. The bigger picture is what matters.

It was off midweek. Never a chance of it going ahead. The question is can we afford to get the right people in to do what is needed to give the pitch it's best chance in future years, or do we just accept this will happen a handful of times a season?

I was under the impression that "experts" and companies that specialise in pitch maintenance had been paid by RAFC to do precisely that. About time these people took some responsibility.

I was watching " Country File " last Sunday. They do a week long very accurate weather forecast. When they were forecasting a repeat of last weekend's weather for this Saturday you could have put your house on neither of this weekend's games being on.

So after spending hundreds of thousands pounds on our pitch, it still of a non league standard.

At least our pitch matches BBM tactics

While I don't necessarily disagree with you on the pitch, I think the weather over the past week has played a huge part in today's postponement: two named storms in two weekends is a rare event.

Why hasn't it affected every other football league team then? If there were postponements all over the place then fair enough but its not we're the only one in the FL up to now.

The pitch has been a running sore for donkeys years and laying new surfaces has been a cosmetic answer to a major surgery problem. The water table comment tells you all you really need to know. Without radical redesign of the drainage system the pitch problems will never be solved and our great grandkids will be sitting at home on wet Saturday afternoons listening to radio Bolton

What I can`t understand is given our geographical position, we get more than our fair share of wet weather, yet we get a new pitch laid at a cost of a couple of hundred thousand plus and do not buy the covers to protect it. Had the club invested in raincovers at the first opportunity i.e. after selling Hogan, said covers would have paid for themselves by now.

I suspect the water table under the pitch has risen by a few inches each season because of all the bloody sand the club sees fit to put on it. Even someone like me with limited knowledge of these things, knows that sand clogs up drains, yet this method still continues to be employed.

Isn`t it time the club employed staff that can see beyond the end of their noses and use proactive methods to control the number of postponed games. It seems we are a ship in choppy waters with nobody at the helm, certainly not our invisible, mute chairman.

Agree to have the only game postponed is not acceptable, if we've not spent a penny on the pitch then fair enough but we are talking about a club of our size having spent hundred of thousands on the pitch that has not improved 1 bit.

Thd board over the last few years have fcuked up and wasted money , which we cant afford

Weather and geographical location will be two of the main factors for the postponement. Not everywhere else, even locally, is as high or relatively open to the elements as Spotland. Of course, our underlying pitch problems will have contributed too.

Also, don't forget that Man City had a postponement last weekend too. While it's not impossible, I'd be surprised if we are the only one called off this weekend.
