Someone or some people need to be be held accountable for the state of the pitch
and the money wasted. its nothing short of criminal. |
It does make me wonder if we're seen by these pitch specialists as a bit of a soft touch (similar to how we seem to be viewed in the transfer market).
It seems the more we spend on the playing surface, the worse it gets. I remember a figure of £500k quoted when we did the Spurs re-lay, then more work last summer and the previous one ( I think) at God knows what cost? How much needs spending on it now to get it up to scratch?
Are we employing the correct people/ methods to maintain the pitch properly once work has been undertaken? I don't know the answers but I'm sure the question will be asked on Monday night.
Accrington reportedly did theirs for £300k and it looked pretty decent today before kick off. [Post edited 15 Feb 2020 18:29]

Was always going to be problems with this pitch which I believe was a ‘temporary fix’ for the Spurs game to the end of that season. Nothing more than bog standard renovation has been done since then and the so called new pitch has never materialised.
Whilst credit to Accrington’s ability to put a new pitch in its only them that play there and nothing will change with rugby sharing as we all know, for how many turn up to watch them I’m amazed it’s cost effective for them to play at Spotland. Whilst Accrington played today their pitch looked pretty poor by the end of the game so even a £300k new pitch (which is still cheap compared to other new pitches) can suffer.
The Oli Makin fan club forget that it was his predecessor who was nominated for various pitch awards and got the pitch in some sort of decent shape a few years ago, I doubt if Oli came back (and I’m certain he wouldn’t) he’d stay long anyway given the amount of jobs he’s had since leaving as he has certainly been round the houses in recent years.
Every time I see our groundstaff on the pitch it looks like a youth club outing, are we not paying enough for an experienced Groundsman to take charge? The fact we’ve been through four or five groundsmen over recent years might be an indication that somethings wrong somewhere. |  | | |

The Board admitted that nobody on the board was an expert on pitches and as such, any decisions that are taken with regards to the Spotland is done only after seeking advice from experts. They said that they continually seek professional advice before any decisions with the pitch are made as the Spotland pitch suffers more rainfall than the vast majority of pitches.
They gave details of the problems with the pitch. In July 2016, there was an issue with the instalment of a fibresand pitch, due to a wrong mix. This ultimately led to the problems experienced in 2016-17. The club felt that there was no option but to replace the pitch following the Oxford, Huddersfield and Bristol Rovers matches as the pitch was deemed to be unsafe.
The pitch was replaced at great expense, with the club having no alternative but to go for a Turf based pitch rather than a Fibresand pitch. This was down to the time of the year when the replacement was installed as a fibresand pitch would not grow in February and could possibly lead to further problems as a result.
A turf based pitch will suffer more from the elements than a fibre sand pitch and this has been evident since the problems first started to appear in December, the club have continually acted on the advice given to them, with meetings taking place as recent as the day that the Trust met the board. There is a programme in place for the pitch which acts in the short / medium / long term.
The short term plan will not provide a pitch that is particularly suited to the needs of the management but it is essential that it allows games to take place. The club said that underneath the pitch, the drains themselves are actually fine. All of the issues relate to the surface turf holding water. They said that they continue to be in talks with a number of companies in an effort to get the pitch playable.
In the longer term, the pitch will be getting a full renovation in the Summer. A company has been booked to install a Fibresand pitch, with this company responsible for pitches at Wembley and Twickenham. Russ Green said that he has been in close contact with Hornets over this, and an unprecedented seven week period has been agreed to allow the work to take place and he thanked Hornets for their cooperation in allowing this to happen, as in the past, it’s been a five week period for pitch renovation.”>> |  |

I thought Accringtons pitch looked pretty poor on the Quest highlights after playing in the heavy rain. Of course it may have played better than it looked. Oldham's pitch looked much better and they will have similar weather to ours. Maybe we should approach (or poach) their ground staff. But if it is all in the drains then we need to dig it all up | | | |

It may well be that there isnt much wrong in termsof the turf, it just needs a drainage system that takes away the continuous rainfall durng the winter months
There are numerous drainage systems that look as if they might do the trick without too much disruption of the surface.
Digging a new trench alongside the main stand and then running slit trenches to it off the pitch , there would need to be a further trench in front of the Sandy Lane end to take away the run off to the main drain. This would be considerably cheaper than rebuilding a new surface each season
