We heard that we were only 2 weeks behind Italy and Spain. Surely, we would be seeing 400-500 a day tragically losing their lives by now?

The figures are misleading. They report registered deaths. There is a time lag of about 11 days between a death and the death being registered and released. So when the news say 200 people died today what they are in fact reporting is that 200 people died 11 days ago.
