Govt communications team 15:09 - May 9 with 976 viewssaint22

Who runs this? They are a complete shambles, mixed messages, leaks to media which then mean The Muppets have to play it all down
They are causing as many issues as the useless numpties who are meant to be showing leadership
It’s an embarrassment

As we passed the 30k mark in deaths most of the print media were lubing the nation up to abandon lockdown, then people think its over and get fined (rightly) by the police when they invade Brighton today. The British media are corrupt and run by tax exiles who do not give a monkeys about british workers, all they care about is profits and keeping their influence and lets face it control over our governments. Whats the point of leaving Europe to get back control when governments just do what Rupert Murdoch et al tell them to do

The Great British public can get their heads around simple messages that they want to hear, like “Let’s Get Brexit Done” but they struggle with anything more complex, like the stay home but mixed messages that have been coming out for weeks. Despite nothing changing, it seems like a large chunk of people have decided that the lockdown is over. The government managed to get their Brexit message across, its a shame they had struggled with their messages over lockdown.

Maybe the problem is that when you recommend this and that there will always be those who will ignore it.
You have to be firm like when we brought in fines for drink driving etc if you don't enforce slowly it falls apart.
As to enforcing, good luck with that.

what mixed messages have been coming out?

The state of the lockdown (lack of) in this country what, 7 weeks in, is precisely why locking us down (properly) for longer was/is an absolute non-starter - too many people don't give a toss and will do what they want and be allowed to.

You watch, tomorrow the PM will relax a small part of the lockdown and will be met absolute helmets moaning, complaining, criticising, saying they don't understand.

People will ignore the lockdown-lite and blame everyone else when the virus infection rate increases - and you will be front of the queue

Despite the critical importance of clear public messaging to any public health strategy, the government’s communications have been marred by mixed messages throughout this deadly pandemic. Its core message, asking the public to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives, has been very effective, but this has consistently been undermined by ministers and advisers inaccurately briefing the press that there is about to be a shift in policy. Before the Easter weekend, reports appeared that ministers thought that the public had been too obedient in following the lockdown, and that a relaxation was imminent. The same happened before this bank holiday weekend, forcing the government to clarify that there was no change in restrictions and that people must continue to abide by the law.

The tone of these briefings has been shockingly out of step with reality. Last week, the UK’s official death toll overtook Italy’s to make us the worst-hit country in Europe at this point (the UK’s official statistics capture a smaller proportion of excess deaths than in many other European countries, suggesting that, if anything, the UK will look worse as the death toll becomes more accurate). Every day, hundreds of families lose their loved ones to this virus, healthcare workers put their lives at risk by going to work without adequate protection, and care homes struggle to manage the spread of the disease among residents.

Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives

pretty clear to me. Unless you are an imbecile.

You know, you are allowed to act under your own steam when stepping outside of the house.

Plenty. Instead of sticking to their mantra they gave the impression recently that the lockdown (or semi lockdown as you rightly call it) was going to be lifted. The papers got carried away and Johnson tried to put the genie back in the bottle, but you only have to look at the pictures of people out and about on Friday and Saturday to see that the public were putting two fingers up to staying in and protecting the NHS. Hundreds of people are still dying everyday. There is no proper track, trace, isolate system in place yet. Lifting lockdown at thus time would appear to be a very foolish move. The NHS have not been swamped in the main that to lockdown. That could change rapidly if it is lifted too soon.

I was rather naively praising Boris for standing up to the media, it looks like yet again Rupert Murdoch is running the government communication team

who gave this message?

The media, that is who! The same media who have been largely appalling this whole time.

A significant majority of people who get this thing will be fine, in fact, something like a few hundred under 65 years old have died.
More people have died from the Flu that has a vaccine, compared to C19 without one.

that is not me saying we are over-reacting at all, the lockdown needed to have happened and probably in a more harsh way.

but inside the bigger cities and even hotspots (london etc), people just dont care, do what they want, risk growth of this thing but blame everyone else as much as they can.
A fine example of why a longer and/or more stringent lockdown would not work in this selfish, I want it now society we live in.
It is about time people took responsibility for their own actions. Go out, maintain as much social distancing practice as possible and live your life.

The media have a huge amount to answer for (along with any govt failings) as it is them who have plastered mixed messages all over their front pages and now claiming people are 'confused'.

At every briefing I have watched, the same message is given, Stay HOME etc (which will slightly change later)

Yet over two thirds of Germans support the restrictions, you'll always get idiots.
