As much as I do agree that it’s most likely some girl who’s just not happy that Mendy didn’t become her husband/only had sex with her and didn’t become girlfriend and boyfriend, so what’s to get back at him/earn a few quid, I wouldn’t necessarily conclude anything until a bit mores released as every once in a while it is an actual rape case.

Although after having a read about it I do find it quite unfair that he’s been suspended for it, especially seeing how these cases usually turn out in the end.

Are you for real?

You think the CPS would charge him with 4 counts of rape if it was one girl trying to get a few bob off him??
Those birds with Rooney and the photos the other week were the type to get a few Bob off him as you put it

Be careful it’s not 1981 anymore

So he's guilty as charged then is he and the CPS never get it wrong. I was trying to emphasise the issues with being a top premier keague footballer and all that goes with that mantle
Cleary something went wrong which neither you nor I know about. Fwiw, my opiniin also is that the accused in such cases should not be named unless found guilty when the book should be thrown at him.
Why do you have to jump down everyone's throat when you have an opinion that may didfer or you misunderstand?

Rape is a nasty crime and difficult to prove in court. Once upon a time people just said they didn’t do it. They can’t do that now thankfully due to DNA and improved forensics. Instead they just claim that the sex was consensual. It is helpful to the prosecution to have names out there before the trial as new evidence can often be found. It is hard enough to get a conviction for sexual assault as it is. Many rapists go free and the number of sexual assaults is on the rise. It is depressing to see that the attitude still prevails that girls are still “asking for it” and making up assault claims. Yes, a small number do, but the truth is that the vast majority of sex crimes still go unpunished here. Many don’t even get as far as court as the victims often feel as though they are the ones on trial. I have no idea if Mendy is guilty or not but keeping his name out of the media was never going to be easy. The accused have to present at a magistrates court to start with and there is always a level of media coverage even for the most minor cases. If he is found not guilty no one will give it a second thought. If he is a serial sex offender, this may encourage more victims to come forward. Having managed a team of paralegal officers in the CPS in the Rape & Serious Sexual Offences team for a number of years I can tell you that the biggest problem is not some celebrity getting themselves into a situation where their name is plastered all over the media, it is getting justice for the victims. Most rapes or sexual assaults go unpunished, that is the main problem we have.

Agreed Sogs, rape is an appalling crime and many men need to understand when it’s inappropriate to ‘carry on’ and it must be very tricky to prosecute fairly.

That said, I once had a girlfriend who summed it up by saying “once his balls are slapping against your arsehole it’s a bit late to say no!”

To be fair, she was from Llanelli.

I see Man City have issued a club statement:

"If the allegations against Mendy are proven we shall not hesitate to invoke the most serious punishment the club can invoke. He'll be transferred to Portsmouth. "

Rape is a very serious criminal offence. There can be a lot of interpretation between what one party thought/did and vice versa though. However, if someone is charged with a serious crime, andy employer is best advised to suspend them on full pay. It can be tough on the employee, but it has to be remembered that they have put themselves in this situation.

Also, professional footballers had history with this crime. Adam Johnson pleaded not guilty until the very last moment, subjecting his victim (a minor) to months of anguish. There have been others, most of whom pleaded not guilty, though without checking facts, my impression is that the majority have either settled out of court or been found guilty.

Apologies, no he isn't guilty until proven but for you to insinuate its some girl who wants a few bob is pretty low where rape accusations are concerned

If I am wrong then I do apologise

When this story first broke a couple of names were all over social media, one of when was Mendy. You can’t keep a lid on these things and it is probably better that the correct name is out there rather than have others wrongly implicated.

As I understand it SoG there used to have to be very compelling evidence to bring a case to trial. Is this still the case? As you say many crimes like this go unpunished which is terrible for the victims.

When I started at the CPS the test in all cases was that the Reviewing Lawyer would have to find that there was a good chance of conviction and it had to be in the public interest to bring the case to court. Then for rape and serious sexual assaults they set up RASSO units of specialist lasers and paralegals to deal with these cases and changed believing the victim rather than examining the evidence which, as you can imagine, led to a lot more prosecutions but not necessarily a lot more convictions. I think that they have change the evidential standard again since I have left but not sure what it is now. One of the major issues of late is that the police now require the victim to hand over their mobile phones for inspection. This flies in the face of the prosecution position that the victims previous relationships/sexual activities have nothing to do with the current case (something that was brought to the fore in the appeal in the rape case by footballer Ched Evans - previous activity not phone evidence). It is a very difficult situation. Many victims don’t want to go to court because they have to relive the experience and the defence often tear their character apart. No wonder that many settle out of court (something which makes people wonder if it was just about the money). It is frightening to hear just how many girls and women have been victims of serious sexual assault. Many don’t go to the police because they either feel that they won’t be believed or that they can’t face the court case. I actually witnessed a middle manager (at the CPS)grab a case workers boobs in the office in front of her workmates a few years ago. I asked her privately if she wanted to raise a complaint against him but she just laughed it off and said oh that’s just X and he only does it for a laugh! When he left we found a pile of old Mayfair mags in his desk so probably not just for a laugh. We had a case where a guy allegedly assaulted and raped his sister in law. She decided not to press charges. Months later the same bloke raped and murdered his wife. Many of the case workers (they were mostly female) needed therapy after a few years of working on these cases.
