Homophobic Chants Reported At Watford 17:53 - Nov 1 with 3371 viewsSaintNick

Apparently a Watford fan has complained to the police about homophobic chants, although it doesn't say whether it was Watford or Saints fans he was accusing.

Personally I didn't hear anything untoward from the Saints supporters nor Watofrd for that matter, did anyone else hear anything

Your last paragraph is spot on Nick. LGBTQ awareness/support whatever you want call it in society and football in particular is years behind the tackling of racism.

But what I love about the city of Southampton is as a city we don’t bury our heads with the issues and will always look to bring it out into the public forum. For a small(ish) city it is massively diverse and generally welcoming.

Saints themselves were light years ahead of other clubs with the Racism Just Ain’t Saintly - Show Racism The Red Card, the text message service they brought in about 15 years ago etc.

My theory as to why racism didn't flourish in Southampton, although of course it did exist is that in Southampton unlike other cities in the main we didn't have big areas that were solely one ethnic community, the nearest to it was the Derby Road area or as it was referred to the Jungle, that was a mish mash of asians, Caribbean, irish, students and just bedsit land in general, everyone mingled and it created diversity as well as racial harmony.

You would see many black & Asian faces at the Dell in the 1970's and they never had any bother.

Likewise the Gay community they were out there (no pun intended) in the community, they had their pubs and clubs and they welcomed people into them of all persuasions , people here accepted them and it was live and let live.

It all worked because it wasn't forced on people no one was hidden in their own communities
