Excellent match just been on ITV4s Big Match revisited. Saints v Man Utd 1981. Watch out for a spectacular over heard kick from Keegan wrongly disallowed and some terrible punditry from Dennis Law. That was a great Saints side but didn’t remember the keeper we had. Worth watching if you have catch up.

The keeper? Big Kat! Bit of a legend from the pre-Shilton time.
Yes, I thought he was a good goalkeeeper and and he is still the only Croatian goalkeeper to ever play in the top flight of English football, although in those days it was part of Yugoslavia.
One of the things that impressed me was how few United fans there were. Throughout the 60s and 70s, they used to take over large swathes of the Dell but not at that game in 1981. They were confined to the small away section in the corner of the Archers with just a handful of presumably local kids in the Milton. I was out of the country from 1980 onwards so wasn't there. Was it all-ticket? Because in the 70s only cup matches were, which meant that if 5,000+ United fans arrived early enough for a league game, they could pay at the gate and all get in..

In the Keegan era every game was all ticket and away fans used to get just 1,500 tickets in that corner of the Archers Road.
With tickets only available by paying at the ticket office it made it difficult for fans of other teams to get tickets in home sections

Thanks for that info, Nick. Only allowing a small away section in the corner may have been one of the reasons why we had such a good home record, even against the big clubs, during that period. The celebrations behind both goals when Saints scored were great to see. Sadly, it's a bit different nowadays when we play clubs like United at home.

Our home record would be a lot better these days if we had the current European Footballer of the year in our team, as we did back then.
I think that had a lot more to do with it than how many away fans were in the ground
