so back in 16th to early 20th centuries the Establishment feudal lords used to winnow out the over population in the lower classes by starting a good war. That option disappeared when the nuclear bomb appeared.
So how would the British Establishment seek to reduce the stress on the treasury's coffers?
- how about a good plague
- or a meltdown in the public health system
- an energy crisis so the weakest play hypothermia bingo
- homelessness
History really does repeat itself

There are still enough gas reserves left in the North Sea for the UK to be self-sufficient. The problem is companies found it cheaper to import gas from Russia than to invest in exploiting the new reserves. It's a bit like the railways: once companies are privatized, profit is everything and that means as little investment as possible. Ultimately though, the drive for short-term profit tends to rebound on both the companies and their customers. [Post edited 3 Dec 2022 18:47]
