Good thread.
When I joined the RAF in the 80’s the strength was 121,000

It’s now around 38,000 I’m told. You can fit the RAF in its entirety in Villa Park.

I’d agree with the American general.
For many successive years governments have cut the size of our army, navy and raf and the MOD has also bungled numerous procurement exercises which, in effect means that a lot of our kit is outdated and past its shelf life. What’s happened in the Ukraine has caught many people out, but let’s be honest the writing has been on the wall for years because Putin has been a lot more aggressive and expansionist, Georgia, Chechnya, Ukraine, Syria to name but a few. We’ve also seen radioactive material used in London and a nerve agent in Salisbury.

As an increasingly poor, small island on the fringes of Europe, we simply cant be one of the big boys.

Shirley our main role is to play a key part in a modern NATO, and to play that part with the best equipped and well paid professional army that we can sustain.

Britains global role is around the so-called soft power we can exert.

All the Brit Nat brexity loons will find the reality very hard to swallow.
Best put down the Daily Heil and the Torygraph.
Turn off the BBC.

The Army has been in serious decline in numbers since the mid 80s with a virtually 50% reduction with a number, with of minor peaks in between up to now . During the 70's when I was serving the numbers were 373.00 but even the then labour government reduced numbers significantly . Its still considerd to be the best trained but sad to see as happened to my regiment when numbers are cut also go in a lot of case whole regiments disbanded or amalgamated into one unit .

It has been shown that the Russian army is badly run, badly trained and badly equipped. Even Ukraine with a much smaller army had forced them to retreat from 20% of the land they captured with the help of the west superior weapons.

Not really. Russia is on track to wear down the Ukranian military. The troop numbers are roughly similar and the Ukraine is getting top notch equipment from the West. The Ukraine took back a few small villages , which has now been reversed.

Totally embarrassed?? I spent plenty of time in the middle east (in Afghan at least) and to suggest we were "totally embarrassed" screams that you have no understanding.

In fact it's really wound me up that you would just throw that statement out there having had nothing to do with it but sit on your arse and watch it all unfold.

What a W@#&3R

In many cases you would be fighting against the British Army then….?

I am not sure that you have thought this one out.

And of course the IRA were bombing their fellow Irish men.

Recent reports show that the IRA and loyaist are still dealing drugs to youngsters and they only agree to write of some of the drug debts if the children join in riots.

In Iraq, there was no plan after the invasion. The same for Afghanistan. It pains me to say it, but the Yanks showed us how counterinsurgency should be done.

The British army had to get an escort o
ut of their remaining base from the Mahdi army. They promised not to attack us.

The British were hated in Afghanistan because of our previous history there

Both conflicts were a political, stategic snd military defeat for us

Lessons haven't been learned either, if that US general is correct.

Warmongerer wants more money to spend on guns and missiles and what not. Big business for some.
He even was able to get a ridiculous quote out about the potential threat of nuclear missiles from Russia out.

I spend a lot of time with the Afghan National Army. For the later part of my time out there I was mentoring them. Spending all day everyday with them, even sleeping besides them. And I can tell you now, that they did not hate me for being British. My translator assured me of that, it was in fact quite the opposite. He personally kept telling me how he appreciated everything Britain had done for him and his family and how his life had/has changed for the better as a result.

The taliban themselves would just blend back into the community and pop back out once we’d gone. Hide behind their wives and children if they had to, knowing we could do nothing. Which is what the did en mass once we’d left pretty much. If that = “embarrassing defeat” then I’m not ashamed.

So since what you’ve said there is a load of sh** the rest can be assumed to be as such.
