Birds I Have Fancied 13:57 - Sep 29 with 4594 viewsBoston

A year or two ago I started a thread about a raptor I'd spotted, well I've just had another surprise. About 30 mins ago I pulled into the grounds of Warbrook House in Eversley, Berkshire and sitting on the railed fence straight in front of me (not at all concerned about me or the car), is what I'd swear was a large adult Red Tailed Kite! I see these birds 2/3 times a week in Massachusetts and get a number of good close ups every year, but I had no idea they were in the UK...or has a zoo lost one? Will the RSPB be interviewing me on BBC2 this evening!

Poll: Thank God The Seaons Over.

Maybe you ornithologists may be able to solve this one.

Two birds about the size of a robin (maybe smaller, a mating pair?) dark but with yellow trimming and a bit of white.
They move really quickly, I've seen them all summer.

Any ideas?

Red kites are everywhere here in watford . Beautiful birds.
We get lots of parakeets as well but they tend to stick to the posh areas like Nascot Wood.
Leafier areas which they tend to prefer.

On my travels, i've been very lucky to see most of the Eagle varieties that exist, from Russia to South America, and from Northern Canada to South east asia.

But red kits are common here, along with other large birds, but thats the donuts!

They were named that by sailors because the birds had a habit of dozily landing on ships' decks, whereupon the mariners swiftly killed them and used them to add protein and variety to their diets.

Trivial fact of the day contender?

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."
