Match officials have been making @rses of themselves since the game began. This may have been handled poorly, and VAR is just highlighting that some officials are just not anywhere near good enough to be doing the job. But in this case, offside is offside. How can allowing the goal be good for the game? Even Postecogleau thinks VAR is good for offside decisions.

Yeah but they’re the best we’ve got right now, and that’s just down to many factors that many have been going on about for years now. As as much as I do think that people have far too high expectations on todays officials, I’ll also admit that the quality isn’t as good as it’s been in the past, but that’s mainly due to the fans, FA, players, media etc… and not that much down to the officials themselves.

But yeah well the offsides offside, as many don’t seem to realise that if you’re gonna have offside with VAR then it’s gonna always be close and it’s gotta be black and white. As many seem to think that there’s some perfect solution, but to most the suggestions anyone hears there’s always a major flaw or two behind them.

VAR has taken so much of the excitement out of the game.

It's also effectively reversed the sensible 'level is onside' rule, so that noone is considered 'level' any more.

And in relation to everything else it's gone far beyond its original remit of cutting out obvious errors. It gets involved in everything and the decisions it makes are frequently ridiculous.

It's like the emperor's new clothes, nobody in authority can admit quite how sh!t is is.

Why are people expectations of referees too high? If they are too high what should our expectations be?

Also, why is the fact that quality is not as good as it was the fault of fans, FA, players, media etc.?

I'm afraid I don't hear this sort of rubbish in any other sport or walk of life.

Well because many seem to think that refs will be able to always please everyone, that’s why. And as anyone who knows football will know that it’s just not possible. And yeah everyone goes on about consistency, but when the LOTG are always changing they can’t be that consistent because they’re told to do different things so often. And even then footballs a sport of opinions meaning that no matter what you’ll always get some grey areas where no matter what a ref gives there will be controversy and like 50% of footballing fans will say they got it wrong whilst the other half will say they got it right.

And it’s just as much the media, fans, FA’s etc… fault due to how off-putting it is to be a ref these days. As even when refs get decisions correct, you’ll still have all the usual moaners like Klopp, Mourinho, Arteta etc… complaining and consistently blaming them for their teams poor performances. And this then leads to the media being all over it and taking that criticism to the next level, making it the main talking point of any game that’s got any decision with any debate whatsoever around it. And then that leads to many fans and youth/grassroots coaches thinking it’s ok to do that, which is why so many grassroots refs, and even blooming kids get abused so badly and consistently in a flipping U13’s game where none of the players will be pro athletes let alone footballers!

Yet the FA have until recently, done very little around all of this and have just let all happen, which is exactly why there’s such a lack of refs right now. And that lack of refs is why many of the top officials aren’t the best, because there’s so very little competition for their positions due to how few refs are coming through, especially on the younger side. And that’s down to many factors, but very little down to the refs at the top themselves as they’re just simply the best we’ve currently got, and things will only get worse until things properly change, which hopefully this season will be the start to

I like the old story of the Yorkshire umpire being told by a player he'd just dismissed that he wasn't out, and the umpire responding: "you have a look in the Yorkshire Post in the morning and see whether you were out or not".

We should get back to the sense that the 'correct' decision is not determined by TV or VAR or any other stupid system but by whatever the ref on the pitch says and then take the rough with smooth in terms of the consistency of decisions.

And any issues around the quality of referees can and should then be determined offline by a system which monitors their performance and decision making - and let them use whatever whacko technology and statistics they want to compare the actual decisions to what might be considered the 'prefect' decision. But they can do that after every game and improve things over time.

Unless, like goal line technology, any 'help' to refs can be immediate and (with the odd exception) foolproof, it should be nowhere near the game in real time.
