U21 : Watford 0 Swansea City 5 14:05 - Apr 1 with 1018 viewsKeithHaynes

Swansea City Under-21s are back on the road as they travel to London to face Watford in the Professional Development League at Vicarage Road (2pm).

Last time out, the Swans suffered late heartbreak at Wigan Athletic as two late goals from a trialist and Leo Graham had cancelled out Yori Griffith's first-half opener.

The Hornets have claimed two wins in their last five outings in the league, having recently beat Barnsley 2-1 away from home.

The reverse fixture saw both sides settle for a point in an entertaining encounter, which ended four goals a-piece.

Coach Anthony Wright: "We'll put the disappointment of the result at Wigan behind us, but we'll certainly build on the performance as the younger players did brilliantly.

"All of our remaining away games until the end of the season are at stadiums, which for the scholars is a good experience and learning moment to embrace.

"We know our form away from home hasn't been what we would have hoped, but in terms of learning and development, the performances have been there."

I have questioned the commitment of Cadogan and Congreve. This is the way to reply to criticism. Foot on the pedal every game. Congreve had a good spell in the first team at 18. He now needs to FORCE his way into the first team. He is a talented player but that is not enough. Ben Woodburn is too.

I'm sure Congreve saw your criticism and thought I'll show him.

Why not? There is a tendency to go easy on the kids. I do not agree with this.

He jumped out of a wall v Oxford Utd costing the club a few hundred thousand pounds in lost revenue. (Swansea were coasting aat 2-0 up) I cannot remember who OUFC got in the next round but it was a biggish game. Martin identified the culprit. he has struggled for game time since and seen other bypass him.

He also opted out of tackling a Cardiff city payer in an U21 match I attended at 0-2 leading to 0-3. I am sure he will remember it. Football is a contact sport. He is a survivor of the u13 tour to the USA some 7-8 years ago. A lot of time and effort has been put into Congreve Cotterill and Lloyd.

Yes us arm chair pundits do sometimes have to eat our words more than happy to be proven wrong by players who I have doubted.
Personally what I have seen of Congreve I like, if it is to come to rest Ronald I'm sure he can do a job for the first team Haven't seen Cadogan but if he is scoring hat tricks then he must deserve a chance in the first team squad and Nzingo had a couple.
Perhaps the question should be
,"Who do we see in the first team squad that we think will be the in the squad in the near future and who will replace the rest?"

I recall watching the u14 play on line on this tournament and I was mightily impressed with their skills. It would be a disappointment if none came through as first team regulars. The club have given them every chance.

Lloyd, Congreve and Reuben Davies are still in the system although Davies seems injury affected sadly. Geoff Bony is in France in an academy and Tom Stokes players for Cinderford on loan from Merthyr and could still make the grade.

Joel Cotterill, Kian Kenkins and Kai Ludvigsen in that picture are still with us as well. Jack Karadogan was at Newport for a bit, got on the bench a few times, now in the Cymru Prem.

Congreve's biggest problem stepping up is pace. He can make a yard of space but up against faster and smarter men at senior level struggles to do anything with it. Confidence soon lost. If he had the same top speed as Parker or (supposedly) Govea, or even Ollie Cooper, he'd be a very different prospect. Still younger than Dan James was when DJ made his senior debut. But he's slipped down the most-likely list since Martin promoted him prematurely.

OS match report.
Well done lads!

A Maliq Cadogan hat-trick and a brace from Glory Nzingo finish got Swansea City Under-21s back to winning ways as they claimed an emphatic victory over Watford at Vicarage Road.

Cadogan and Nzingo produced a fine finish apiece in the opening half to send the Swans into the break two goals to the good.

Cadogan would go on to add two further goals and complete his hat-trick on the hour mark, with Irishman Nzingo then rounding off the scoring in stoppage time.

The visitors had Evan Watts, Ben Lloyd, Joel Cotterill and Cameron Congreve return to the starting line up following their international duties with Wales Under-21s.

Filip Lissah - fresh off signing a new long-term contract - also returned to skipper the side after recent involvement in the first-team set up.

The Swans dominated the opening stages, and they got their reward for a bright start by taking a fifth-minute lead.

Cadogan was played through by Seb Dabrowski, and he sent the balll round the keeper into the net.

Swansea were playing some lovely football, with Dabrowski and Congreve creating trouble down either flank for the hosts.

Another flowing attack saw the visitors work the ball quickly to Lloyd, whose close-range effort was denied and Nzingoโ€™s follow-up was cleared away for a corner.

Cadogan then spurned a great opportunity when he headed just over at the far post.

The second goal soon came, however. Nzingo won possession - Dabrowski the provider again - in the middle of the field and was then sent in behind the defence to calmly steer in and double Swansea's lead.

Lloyd was next to go close, sending a low effort agonisingly wide, while Lissah and Cadogan were both denied from point-blank range as the Swans continue to have a stranglehold on proceedings.

Maliq Cadogan
They retained their two-goal lead at the break, and started the second period as they had the first, with Cadogan finding the net to further extend their lead.

A brilliant delivery from Charlie Veevers sent the striker on his way and he finished clinically.

Veevers was soon involved again, this time sending a dangerous delivery into the area, but James Clarridge cleared before Lloyd could get a foot to it.

Cadogan would then go on to bag his first hat-trick in a Swansea shirt with another accomplished finish after a long-range cross found him in his stride, finding the bottom corner.

The Swans were not done there, however, and Nzingo would add to their tally deep into stoppage time after a deflected pass fell for him to fire home.

Swansea City Under-21s: Evan Watts, Kian Jenkins (Iestyn Jones 71), Sebastian Dabrowski, Joel Cotterill (Jacob Cook 63), Filip Lissah (captain), Ben Lloyd, Cameron Congreve (Thomas Woodward 71), Mitchell Bates (Yori Griffith 63), Maliq Cadogan, Charlie Veevers, Glory Nzingo.

Substitutes: Remy Mitchell.
