I think we are overlooking a big problem. Jack Stephens 22:07 - Aug 26 with 1233 viewsGRIM

JACK STEPHEN'S.
All the time RM shoehorns him into the side we're going to continue to struggle.
All this talk about a new keeper & the need for a proper striker we're all overlooking an ongoing problem.
RM's love affair with JS is now embarrassing.

Pains me to agree.

James Milner, he sadly is not.

Agree. JS is too pedestrian and part of the root cause for the slow lethargic build up from back.
When he does get forward he will stop, put his foot on ball and plays back again. He is very weak at dealing with any aerial balls - not ideal for a CB.

I am amazed that we haven't found a better replacement in this (or last) transfer window, and RM still believes he is the best option we have.

Given that he has been given the captains armband again, it looks like he is in for the duration.
I would like to see us go with a flat back 4 with Harwood-Bellis, KWP, Bednarek, Sugawara.

Good servant and all that, but time to upgrade. There is not another premier team (or top 6 championship) that would sign him.

It’s impossible to understand how he has kept getting picked manager after manager
He was appalling under Ralph yet here he is getting picked again each game and essentially having RM play a New formation so he can play
It’s mental
He JUST about is championship level

You're right JS is a good guy, but good guys don't win you football matches, good footballers do.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Martin go with a back 4 for the next few games as the main issue is a lack of goal threat or attacking creativity.

But I would personally drop THB out of the side as hes been the worst of the 3 CBs in the last 2 games.
I think THB will come good and take Stephen's place eventually but he clearly needs to adjust to the demands of the Prem.
I'd go with Taylor LB, KWP RB, Stephen's and Bedders as CBs ..about 600 prem games experience between them.

What about the two new ctr backs, Wood & Edwards are they not even a consideration, if not, why did we buy them, another waste of money like Stewart.

If I was THB I would be offended by that
He is a thousand times the footballer Stephens is

As we saw towards the end of last season, RM thinks that Jack can be a link between the defensive line and the midfield. I see it as playing a midfield diamond with JS at the base.

There are a number of problems with that, some because of JS's abilities and years of training and some tactical.

JS is and always will be a CB. He wants to face the ball and deal with it coming towards him and needing to be sent on its way back where it came from. Playing in a position where he needs to pay the ball in a different direction from which he received it, i.e. turning, is not his game. His vision is not good enough and nor is his passing ability. OK, he may be better able to break up play but often he is found out of position and he does not do that either.

Tactically, playing a flat back 4 with JS slightly advanced can be a problem. JS has a tendency to drop into that back 4, making a flat 5 and space ahead of them for the opposition to exploit. The very best DF do not do that. Think Kante, Kalvin Phillips at his best, Rodrigo at City. They all step into that space, stopping or cramping the opposition number 10 and JS is not confident we enough for that.

There are shapes that would help JS but perhaps not the team. A 4-3-2-1 say where JS is part of a deeper lying 3 man shield in front of the back 4. This very much limits our options going forward but frankly at the moment does that matter because we have no real threat there and a few draws in the next matches would be welcome.

Another option is to free JS of tactical shackles and ask him to win the ball and give it to those who can play a bit. That risks a bit of anarchy of course.

Or just leave him out because he does not really fit the possession/passing game RM wants?

I am not wishing for this, but the only way apparently, is for him to get a long term injury. Desperate times.

What, leave him out, how dare you, are you trying to upset RM.
There's more chance of signing a striker (Tongue in cheek).
