Interesting article from Souness on how boring he sees this . He quotes RM on saying he’s embarrassed to only be on five points but won’t change his police . Possession stats mean nothing in reality. Most impressive passing stats involve the ball passed in the defending third and shows most passing to be backwards or sideways . It must be frustrating for a striker these days as they are not given the ball when they should . We are so typical of this . My opinion is that it is the primary reason so many home fans have walked . The fare is simply boring . Fans want goals, excitement in front of goals . Endless sideways passing really is boring . It’s time .

Martin's possession style isn't doing very well for him tonight, 4 nil down and not 30 mins in.
Will he survive the night?
BTW, when we had Dyer and Routs we often used Dyer's pace for an "out ball" putting it up the line for him to chase, his searing pace getting him to the ball and relieving the pressure. We did not and never had played the kind of possession game that Martin had us suffering under. We didn't, for example, play suicidal passes in our own box, the ball was sent not shuffled around our own area.
You'd think you hadn't been watching us very long.
Its a different level mun. Clearly you need to strengthen with better players.
Factually Russ got Soton promoted by playing possession based football. And thats what Swans are trying to do.
Didn’t we try more direct football under Duff. How did that go ? I hope you enjoyed that, i didn’t.
Nobody says Roberto, Brendan, and Michael Laudrup did not serve up exciting possession based football, of course they did. Of course they were more careful in our own third.
But the Swansea Way is possession based football. QPR would often give us the ‘boring, boring Swansea treatment’ in West London.
I think you would be better iff watching hoof ball in Legoland, plenty of tickets available. Hoof !!

I really find this a lazy response. I don't think anyone wants a return to long all football or Michael Duff. But the style now is slow, labourius, possession for possession sake. Laudrup, Rodgers even Potter were front foot football with wingers, pace, RISK and enjoyment. Passing around the back trying to bore teams into submission is something entirely different

Don't you think the first half yesterday was front foot football.

You can win at hoof ball one week - correct. But as you have little control …. then u can lose the next week.
The beauty of possession based football is that you can get to win each week, Barca, Spain, Arsenal, Citeh. Primarily cos the other team dont have the ball.
Good points on this thread about exciting wingers, and not doing dull stuff in our defensive third. O agree.
But its the way to win games week in week out, boring or not.

That six, those clubs aren’t afraid to hoof when the situation requires it. I’m not harking back to the days of Nat Lofthouse and Peter McParland here btw

How many games in the last 3 years have we had by far the most possession and lost?
Plus, when the majority of teams are playing thatstyle, we can't all win so the second paragraph is rubbish.
Then you have to have good enough players and we can't afford them which was why Martin failed dismally here and even on taking the Saints up, couldn't compete financially and so, after only gaining 5 points in 16 games, he was sacked.
It's like you don't understand football, take the blinkers off mun, there's another 90% to see.
Edit, I will add AGAIN that we never ever played football like Martinball before he came and we haven't played so much of it since he left. Williams is at least learning and changing things, trying to adjust and improve. Martin stuck rigidly to his style saying he'd rather lose his way than win another way and he said it down here AND in Southampton. The bloke is a dick who puts himself ahead of the club.

Have to agree William's has tried different things, maybe he now needs to go back and look at what has work and what hasn't. That will take a lot of work for him and his coaching team but it needs to be done.

Let me say this slowly so you understand ……if 2 possesion teams play each other then (guess what ?) usually the one who plays in best wins. See Citeh vs Arsenal last season. I am not sure why you dont know this.
My examples are fact, you are trying to use your view of Swans to win the bigger arguement. Its like a drunk bloke saying that because he has an ugly wife then there can be no beautiful women in the world. Nonsense on stilts.
Martin achieved what we want from Swans so its directly relevent. What happened after getting to the Prem is a different problem that required a different solution. Shrewd investment.
Only you are suggesting Martinball is the only flavour of possession football. You are arguing with yourself. Its self evident that Brendan, Roberto and Michael all produced more exciting possession based football. They educated us.
I do think you would enjoy it more at Legoland. Hoof !!

Seeing as we're going so slowly...we played against teams who didnt play possession above all else and lost, a lot. We played against teams who did play possession football and also lost. That's because the best team on the day usually wins regardless of style.
If two teams playing exactly the same style play each other there can stiil only be 3 outcomes. The thing you are ignoring is that merely playing possession football doesn't guarantee you anything.
Middlesborough, Cardiff, WYCOMBE, WBA, Bristol City, Sheff Utd, Blackburn, Millwall...how many of those teams play the possession style?
To clarify, you still have to play good football whatever your style.
Martin at Saints isn't relevant because he couldn't do it with us but he went there where they had a much stronger squad for our division. A decent manager would have gotten them automatically promoted, Martin managed the play offs.
That is not what I'm saying but that is your limited comprehension at work again. What I am saying is that possession alone doesn't win games. Not that I'd clasify Roberto's side as heavy on possession, we were great in attack but there were quite a few high scoring games as our defence was leaky, Tate, Monk, Lawrence and Austin, hardly great players for a possession style but they had bite, they worked hard but when under pressure the ball was sent long and we actually used proper wide players, Paul Anderson and Andy Robinson.
Brendan And Michael, first name terms eh, they were possesion base but even Brendan got some stick from pundits for "passing for the sake of it" Laudrup though, his team was a joy to watch but even his team wasn't as possession heavy as...yes, Martin. That was because we got the ball forward more quickly and had shots, you know, how you score gioals. Those things that win games.
When football is slow and prdictable it is boring, if you would rather be bored then hey, it takes all sorts. What I want is to be entertained but hopefully by a team that wins more than it loses.

Seeing as this thread has touched on the cup games tonight, I thought I’d mention the blatant foul on the Southampton player through on goal which if given would have resulted in a red card. It wasn’t of course. That could be coined a ‘Swansea decision’!

It funny how some old people only look up to old players and don't accept the talented young players of today. Just so far out of touch.
It is indeed They’ve seen sportspeople whose memory will live a lifetime Winder why Bradman gets to be greatest batsman of all time in every poll ever done And also why Jimmy Greaves is still seen as Englands greatest striker These sportsmen were not so removed from fans as of today and why fans loved them so much Ivor went to games on the bus Charlo the most humble of men Yet both greats That s why

Totally off topic sorry but similarly, Chris Martin caught the tube to his own Coldplay concert in the O2 Arena. He was surrounded by Coldplay fans (all 2 of them😂😂) who didn’t recognise him. Laudable I suppose but still can’t stand the band. Sorry Max
