Thank you Boston. My eyes watered.

And thank you to the people behind the video.

Didn’t he die on the same day rangers were playing in the London standard five-a-sides at Wembley arena? I was there and have vague memories of seeing the headline on one of those stands where some guy was selling the standard.

Yes he did.

Seems amazing that we were playing in this and then the FA Cup semi final was three days later! Unthinkable now.

A shame they posted a photo of Dave Clements (N Ireland) at the end! But an interesting and emotional piece otherwise. The best RB I've seen at HQ (yes, even better than Bardsley!)
If he'd played for a 'bigger' club - would have got 50 caps not 5.

Probably the best permanent Ranger right back Ive seen at the Bush. Hard as nails.

Billy Bingham as Everton manager , labelled us a dirty side .
Norn Iron were hardly shrinking violets under his tutelage.
Lovely piece . A brilliant full back .

Not only the best right back to play for qpr but one of the best English right backs ever. An absolutely magnificent player, ridiculously talented and totally committed. As a defender does not get the praise of Stan,Terry etc but easily there equal, a true great!

The best right back we have ever had. I remember watching the emotional game after Marsh's transfer and Clement scored the winner with a cracking shot. He was as important as Bowles Givens and Francis and should have played more games for England.
He was also much better than Gillard as the opposite full back, as Gillard had no pace and his right leg was simply for standing on.

Souness or as Brian Moore and other commentators at the time pronounced it - Sou (to rhyme with cow) ness.

Definitely a pen though !!!

Crikey. Was a tragic end to a life cut way too short, but then also the fact that his two brothers were both murdered also.

What an awful curse on this family.

Sometimes, its the greats that die young, while the non entities like ourselves, definitely include myself in that, we seem to get through for much longer and less dramatic lifestyles....

Everyone's an entity of some kind - why would you (or anyone) write yourself off so oddly?

Like many others, I was lucky enough to see both Dave Clement and David Bardsley.

The two best England right backs of their generations and both should have won a lot more caps than they did.

I have always found it difficult to separate the two but this as reminded me, Dave Clement was nails.

If that was the game we won 4-2, then I would have been at that one.

I recall when we signed Leighton James, he joked that it was good for him because it meant he wouldn’t get kicked by Dave Clement any more.

I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers.

I remember thinking he was a good signing, then I don't really remember him setting the world on fire. The problem I think was we'd been watching Dave Thomas for years and as good as James was, he wasn't Dave Thomas. I spoke to him outside the ground once, certainly appeared to be an affable type, claimed to be 5'9" but was shorter and, when I asked him did he speak Welsh, off he yakked at the gallop. The bloke with me had Welsh parents and also spoke the language and they had a right old chat ...about something.

Edit...oh blimey, just wiki'd and the poor mans dead.

Swapped with Don Masson, primarily because we realised we dropped a bollock by letting Dave Thomas go and was signed as a replacement, at the same time though we lost Masson's superb passing ability in the middle of the park .

The move suited neither party, neither really settled, Masson was unhappy at Derby (probably contributed to his poor form at the '78 World Cup) and within a year or so both were back at their spiritual homes of Notts County & Burnley.

Remember queuing to get into the Empire pool as it was then for the London Standards 5-a-sides and seeing the headlines about Dave Clement. Tarnished a good night for the club as we won the tournament.

For me also, Dave Clement was the best right back this club ever had. Had everything, pace, could tackle and leave the winger knowing that he had been tackled. Great passer, could shoot with both feet and could easily have been a winger or another central midfielder in the likes of Gerry Francis. For 20 years or so we had an amazing youth development programme, with the likes of Clement, Gillard, Francis and Leach in the late 60’s early 70’s followed by the likes of Allen, Goddard and Waddock in the late 70’s and then Macca, Stewart, Dawes and Neill in the early 80’s. Let’s hope with the application for Cat 1 status those times can return and a modern day Dave Clement can be produced.

Lovely tributes on here. I wish I could remember him better, I was just too young.

Thanks for posting the video, Boston. Will try to watch it tomorrow.
