| Vipotnik 10:21 - Jan 18 with 1641 views | Dr_Winston | Moves level with Adam Armstrong of Southampton at the top of the Championship scorers list with eleven league goals. Interestingly (according to the BBC), he's done it having played two fewer games and with FORTY fewer shots on goal. Hard to avoid the assumption that if he'd been created more chances in the first half of the season he'd be comfortably leading the standings by now. He's having an excellent season. In contrast, Richard Kone has just five goals overall. Big step up from League One for him, especially at the price QPR paid. | |

Our closing down is improving, but still has some errors. I'm not sure Vipotnik needs to over work. Picking up a centre half should be enough if we are organised and allow him to stay on the pitch longer.

I would argue that as the furthest forward he needs to close the opposition keeper or the press fails.

Depends what others are doing. There's not much need for him to go sprinting to close the keeper down if his options are already blocked off. All they can basically do then is boot it long. Better for him to be free to react to any loose balls that might emerge from the press IMO.

The high press is the way Matos prefers to play and that includes pressing the keeper, we see it every game now.

Last season he would have been a yard short, he loves good service. Has a decent shot on him and has scored with his head in recent weeks. Can’t do it all on his own though, the team on the pitch are letting the side down with the huge amounts of chances they create and miss.

Two players are keeping us out of relegation zone VIP and Vig Imagine these two injured for a while These are the key positions we need coming very soon My opinion

He tends to be offside a lot because he spends the majority of his pressing on the goalie, sometimes if we have got back into a good defensive shape the need to press the goalie is not required, if the goalie comes further up the pitch then he can then be targeted by a conserted press with an eye to exploit the fact the keeper is so far out from his goal area. The whole point of using the goalie is to create a situation where with one player pressing the goalie there are only 9 players to mark the opposition 10 outfield players so creating the free man who can take the advantage of out numbered outfield players how many times in the passed have we been chasing shadows because we got the press wrong. Often leading to Vipotnik running around in circles quite pointlessly, it does seem tobe something that Matos needs to keep on reinforcing similar don't drop so deep in the midfield as teams try get on top in games. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He is often standing offside even when we are attempting to play out from Vigouroux. Whether he has been told to do this to pull the defenders back to leave more space wide I'm not sure. But he also does it when we are building an attack, denying a through ball to him. It's blatant and everyone around me [close to the halfway line] can see it and comment.

Is it worth playing all that many through balls for him? He's not the quickest.

He won't have to run far to get a shot away.

| Vipotnik on 18:43 - Jan 19 with 603 views | JJBomber | He would be one ahead of Armstrong, but for a wrongly given offside ruling out his goal against Birmingham away. What is impressive is how he is scoring with both feet and his head. For a championship striker, that is rare. | | | |

Both points are valid, there are reasons why people often offside, early runs off the shoulder by forwards expecting the early ball from deep that never come quick enough, how many times have you seen we been complaining about defenders not playing the early ball. How many times has Ronald been caught offside similarly because he is supposedly not looking across the line of the defence. At free kicks how many off our players try and hold the line high up the pitch standing offside it is obviously tactics used. When the team is disjointed players not doing what others are expecting then you get no rythym to your game, you cannot anticipate or know what your teammate is going to do, accept that that the player on the ball can't play the ball you as a forward want because of the position of the opposition players marking, so they play a different forward ball. I would say the supposed lack of options available up top was down to the overriding thinking that if you cannot play the ball to feet you don't play a ball forward, which is rubbish, if a player has the ball at his feet and looking down the pitch he can see the best option available to him, be it to feet, over the top , down the line, through the channels, very rarely should you be playing the ball aimlessly. The understanding between Key and Ronald has been woefully it has lead to stalled forward progression, bad defending and undue pressure on the defence, that has been mirrored in other areas of the pitch. Slowly the belief that getting the ball forward quickly is a good thing is starting to appear, yes players will get caught offside but the more you get the ball forward quicker the more forwards with get it right,, typical of the lack of goal scored because of the lack of supply the better supply the better number of positive outcomes or chances made. Strikers have been doing that for years, standing in an offside position makes it more difficult for defenders to keep an eye on where you are.

This^ They stand about a metre or two offside as you say, to keep in the eyeline of their marker, before a ball is played they quickly get onside then make their run, good strikers time it perfectly, its about timing and on rhe same wave length as the player making that pass. Vip has started to click in all facets of being a good striker.

Aguero was very good at it. If you’re onside the defenders can watch both you and the ball at the same time.
