Let’s look at Saints alleged cheating:
EFL rule 127 Prohibited Conduct – Observing Training Sessions
Without prejudice to the requirements of Regulation 3.4 (that each Club shall behave towards each other Club with the utmost good faith), no Club shall directly or indirectly observe (or attempt to observe) another Club’s training session in the period of 72 hours prior to any match scheduled to be played between those respective Clubs.
Saints were allegedly guilty of this, and I fully agree if that is the case it is cheating. However, as the person spying was caught and had all recordings deleted from his phone surely it is attempted cheating, ie we had nothing from it to act as an advantage over Middlesbrough. If we had managed to get footage what would we have gained? Probably a corner or free kick routine? Hardly game changing.
Now let’s look at Middlesbrough’s ACTUAL cheating:
Time-wasting in the EFL is covered primarily by Law 12 (Fouls and Misconduct) of the IFAB Laws of the Game, which dictates that a player MUST be cautioned (yellow card) if they are guilty of delaying the restart of play.
Middlesbrough went 1-0 up after 4 minutes 15 seconds and then proceeded to continually waste time at every throw in, goal kick, corner or free kick for the rest of the first half and much of the rest of the game until they went 2-1 down. This was clearly something that Hellberg had told them to do and every Boro player was guilty. Let’s make it clear – this is actual CHEATING during a game to try and get an advantage over the opposition. When they scored, as a team they strolled back to the half way line for the restart taking as much time as possible. Their keeper caught the ball and under no challenge fell to the floor and took over the prescribed 8 seconds. Every time they had a throw in Boro players were leaving it for each other, or walking up the touch line so that the ref sent them back, or deliberately having two balls on the pitch or not picking the ball up closest to them. The referee was clearly aware of what Boro were doing as the crowd and the Saints players were making him aware but not one single Boro player was booked. Peretz was booked however for apparently taking too long with a goal kick even though it was his first warning.
This time wasting in my opinion is worse cheating than spying on a training session because spying may or may not get you a slight advantage whereas time wasting actually gets you a real time advantage during the game.
So perhaps Hellberg and Boro fans need to stop whining and look at the actual reason they lost which is because we are the better team and Eckert is the better manager
