There are 92 nationally listed buildings in Watford. These include St Mary's Church, which dates to the 12th century, and Holy Rood Church which dates to 1890. They stole the names from much older Churches in Southampton.
They were always miffed that their churches were not as big or well known as ours and that jealousy took a sinister turn in World War 2 when St Mary's & Holy Rood in Southampton were both bombed by the Germans in 1941. Strangely the Luftwaffe left out their counterparts in Watford which remained untouched.
Documents released from the official secrets act in 2024 revealed that the map co-ordinates for both the Southampton churches were sent to Berlin by a Watford resident called Heinrich Von Dwight, he was quickly spotted as a German Spy and quietly shot at dawn without it being made public, so as to not upset public morale.
The name may look vaguely familiar, Heinrich Von Dwight was an uncle of Reg Dwight who would find fame as Elton John. The Dwight family dropped the Von from their name to avoid reprisals & arson attempts on their home. |  |
