Independent regulators for the Prem? 09:06 - May 18 with 1162 viewsSadoldgit

Simon Jordan, one of the few people on TalkSport to talk sense, was very good on the need to bring in independent regulators to sort out the football “pyramid” yesterday morning. He basically said it would take going to war with the EPL to get an equitable distribution of money throughout football and that the only way forward is to bring in and independent regulatory body of people outside of football, but who understand how football finance works. He also called out the likes of Gary Neville and peers who have been talking a good game so far but don’t seem to want to involve themselves in things like wage caps and anything that could prevent the top clubs staying at the head of the table. As we have seen by the attempted breakaway by the big six, football in this country is governed by a few powerful clubs. These clubs are looking for even more power and to cement their places at the top. They can’t be trusted with the goose that lays the golden eggs as they want to keep most of the eggs for themselves. The players Union will be against a wage cap. Without a wage cap and proper financial fair play nothing will change. How far are fans willing to go to push ahead with the radical changes that we need to see brought in to level up the playing field? Would we be prepared to totally boycott the game until proper and equitable changes are brought into professional football?

I thought Neville and co had actually started a petition calling for independent regulation. That seemed to have got a lot of publicity over the last few days.
Even if they are against a wage cap, that won't matter if the regulators are independent as it won]t be up to them.

I struggle with wage caps. In the 60s Jimmy Hill and others had to fight hard to have the maximum wage scrapped.

It might have to be something more along the lines of maximum wage spent per club in a particular league, a stricter financial fair play, that sort of thing.

They are seeking an independent regulator but I don’t think that they have been very vocal on issues that would affect their clubs more. Let’s see.

Which would still be a wage cap, but on the club rather than individuals.

I have reservations too about wage caps. However, limiting the value of any agency fees paid in any deal to 0.5%, and that can only be paid by the player over the time of their contract would be a good start to stopping the hundreds of millions leeching into the pockets of shysters every year, instead of being retained in the football arena. It would also stop the immediacy of quick bucks to be made by getting players to move on. They could make it illegal for clubs to pay that amount as part of the player deal, and any negotiation done on that basis would get the player a ban from English football. Signing on bonuses could be banned, whilst allowing loyalty and continuation bonuses. It probably wouldn't work unless all countries did it though.
