Quality Of World Cup V Premier League 09:20 - Dec 7 with 926 viewsSaintNick

I would suggest that up to now at least, that the quality of teams in the World Cup is not as good as those in the Premier League.

Boufal for example, couldn't cut it in the Premier League but is playing for Morocco in the quarter finals now.

I wouldnt say always, I would say that the England side between 1966-1970 would have beaten any top flight team at the time.

Thinking about it perhaps the difference between the past and now is that back then Leagues tended to be mainly made up of domestic players so an England team or for that matter most countries would be the best players in their league.

Nowadays most Premier League teams are foreign nationals, the players in the England squad are with a few exceptions not the best players in their club sides

The counterargument to that is that there are players in the Premier League who wouldn't cut it at international level. We have a number of them at Southampton, which is why so few of our players are there. Would Adam Armstrong, for example, get into any of the teams there?

The very top club sides like Man City and Liverpool could hold their own against almost any national team because they are essentially international all-star teams themselves. But, most PL clubs couldn't. Sometimes top club sides play against some of the weaker national teams but rarely win. I saw Man City draw a game with Saudi Arabia. Even the Swiss team that got thrashed 6-1 by Portugal would beat Saints easily.

As for the 60s and 70s, there were very few English club sides packed with star players drawn from all over the world like there are nowadays. A typical top flight side usually only had British players in it.

BUT, if you go back to the early 20th century, there was a time when Saints could beat just about any national team in the world, apart from our own. We thrashed teams like France and Argentina. That was because football was still in its infancy in the rest of the world.

Club vs Country

1901 Budapest: Hungary 0-13 Southampton FC

1904 Paris: France 0-11 Southampton FC

1904 Buenos Aires: Argentina 0-8 Southampton FC

Boufal could cut in the in Premier League!

Great to see him getting a chance to shine on the biggest stage too.

Spectacular goals are the best thing to watch, but second best is watching the type of skill on the ball when beating opponents that Boufal has consistently displayed.

Poll: Should we try to replace Selles for the final seven games?
