That's basically how I remember most of those grounds... fading signs, portacabins for club shops (no 'megastores' back then) and stands that looked as though they were about to fall down.

Brings back some memories. He calls that pitch at Old Trafford bare, that was pretty good for the time. I remember times at the Dell it seemed the whole thing was made of sand (a bit like our current defence).

I remember they tried a sand injection technique on the Dell pitch. So much loose sand on top I expected to see camels and the Eighth Army
