I am amused that pretty much the whole of the bottom 6 are opposed to playing at neutral grounds, on the basis it goes against the integrity of the competition over the whole season.

Brighton and West Ham are particularly animated about this. Brighton have 5 home games left out of a total of 9 games.

The Prem need 14 teams in favour to get a vote through.

If you were Brighton, West Ham or any of the bottom 6 you would be heavily inclined to mount a legal challenge, which will delay things by months, and by which time the second wave of the virus will be in full swing.

So there will be little choice other than to void the season.

Poll: Would you take going down to League 1 if it meant new owners coming in?

Pat you come from one side of the fence on this and I come from the centre of the viewpoint in that I don't know enough info either way to make a decision and I want to have a decent debate about it and not upset people.

You make a good point here, basically the opposition in football itself is based on each club's own personal situation, hence that awful woman from West Ham Karen Brady wanted the season null & void from the first weekend it was called off simply because it meant her club would be definitely free of relegation, would she say that if she was in the bottom three.

The competition will lose integrity whichever way it does things, teams playing behind closed doors are not a new thing, teams playing at neutral grounds have happened before as well, just not every team at once.

We have to accept that whatever solution is reached is never going to please everyone and just try to find the one that is best, trouble is we wont know what is best till it is too late, so we have to have plans in force for the time.

No one knows what the situation will be in six weeks time, will there be a second wave ? even the medical experts are divided on this one.

I have read medical opinions that restarting football would save lives, if millions of people stay in to watch football at a weekend rather than go out en masse then that could well stop a second wave, why do you think the government is so keen to re start it, we are all shocked to see pictures now of people in parks etc all close together and potentially passing on the virus, the longer restrictions go on the more the rules will start to be flouted, football could be a big part of keeping people in doors just when we need to suppress a second wave.

Certainly this is part of the governments thinking

Anyway lets not any of fall out over this, at the end of the day it will all be decided by the medical and scientific experts who at least hopefully have some idea of whats going on with this virus, I know I dont

To be honest, I don’t know what the Government’s stance is on the return of football.

I suspect they are watching Germany closely, where I think the return has been delayed by a week.

It would be good if it could be asked about at one of the daily briefings at 5.00pm, and the views of Chris Whitty were heard.

I agree it would be better if it was clearer, but the war on the virus is on several fronts, the first is the medical front which is the one most look at, but the second is the psychologial front which is about keeping 70 million people in lockdown without them going mad and more importantly going out.

I get some info from various sources and right back in March the Government was talking to football and they say that a second wave might have to be suppressed and that was potentially in June, hence this has always been the date they have been working to.

Trouble is you cant go out and tell the nation this directly as it will lessen the impact.

Truth is though football is the one single thing that can keep millions in doors over a weekend instead of going out on the street in numbers, lets be blunt it is not going to be achieved by a new episode of midsommer murders.

So balance it up, a game will be played in the most sterile enviroment you can get between two sets of players who have been tested and re tested and under strict medical conditions, so the players will be safer than going to Tesco on a Saturday.

The benefit will be that it will keep millions in doors not just in the UK but across the world.

Sky usually has around 2 million viewers for a game in the UK, many more watch on illegal streams etc, if it is free to view then these numbers could well go up five times.

In total, about 70 per cent of the UK population watched the Premier League in some shape or form in 2018/19 season, either through Sky, BT or the BBC.

This is the power that football has, the Government can't be seen to be devoting too much time to it, but behind the scenes they know that it's impact could be massive not just in the UK but world wide if the Premier League restarted.

This is the bigger picture I looked at, Boris Johnson to my knowledge isn't a Liverpool supporter so isn't encouraging this so they win the league, it has sound medical and scientific data behind it, believe me this will start to come out as we get nearer the time

I cant believe 70% of the population watched premiership football on TV in 2018 /2019 in some form. I can see that you got that from the premiership website. But it just dosent add up. 7mill watch MOTD, 2mill watch sky and 1.8mill watch BT.
Where are the other 30mill viewers?

I don't know how either, but the 2 million for each sky match for instance will vary in who is watching, then I suppose it is hard to say how many more are watching it in the pub etc.

I dont think they mean 70% of the population watch it every week, but that over a season 70% of the population will have seen it at least once through one of those outlets
