Watching David Luiz's horror show last made me wonder whether we set the bar too high for Saints' defenders? I can imagine the meltdown on here if Vertergaard, Hoedt or Stephens had done what he had done.
Also makes me wonder wether the idea that we can shore up our defence with the purchase of an 'experienced' central defender. The frailties of defenders past their prime all too evident last night.

To be fair, I don't think we've ever had a defender who's won as many honours as David Luiz has. When he was the same age that Vestergaard, Hoedt and Stephens are, he was one of the best players in the world but he seems to have lost motivation and concentration towards the end of his career. Maybe it's time for him to retire. His post-match interview was one of the most honest I've ever seen.
Fonte was 26 when we bought him in 2010 and our defence and successful team over the following 7 years were built around him. We probably need to find another proven central defender in his 20s, not 30s, possibly from the Championship so that he'd be within our price range. Personally, I like Dael Fry.

I know a lot of fans are very critical of Stephens but, personally, I think the central defensive partnership of Stephens and Bednarek is OK: not great but OK. Of course, if we could add a more reliable central defender to the squad, that would be ideal. However, as we found with Hoedt and Vestergaard, you can spend a lot of money and end up with someone who's not even as good as the players you already have. [Post edited 18 Jun 2020 10:46]

I think you should target central defenders from teams that concede very few goals and not from teams that concede a lot (which is the mistake we've been making lately). Vestergaard came from a Borussia Monchengladbach team with a poor defensive record.

Keown, Adams, Bould etc never fûcked about.
Some of the blame lays at the goalkeeper’s door. They have a perfect view and should be screaming at the defender to get rid.
