I've seen it in all of these areas. Unless a policy of zero tolerance is followed, it will always crop up under the guise of "locker-room banter."

It’s sad because there are lots of very decent police, firefighters etc but they end up getting tarred with the same brush. In an ideal world they would not get these jobs in the first place but it isn’t hard to disguise your true self in an interview process. Zero tolerance is required and they should be removed from their jobs when their behaviour becomes apparent.

Is that article implying we should be giving them sympathy do you think? I wonder how the article would have read if they were Tory MP's or didn't look the way they do?

| Local Constabulary on 18:57 - Jan 8 with 1501 views | Saintsforeverj | What amazes me is the stupidity of people. When we are at work, especially in professional organisations, we have to be careful what we say. It's Big Brother. We all know that don't we? It's like the idiots who put things on Facebook or twitter, that we can all read. These officers using unacceptable terms in a police station are stupid, amongst other things. | Local Constabulary on 19:21 - Jan 8 with 1481 views | solent_toffee | I have a good family friend who was senior in Cheshire C.I.D. He invited me to a fundraising night about twenty years ago. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. Racist, sexist, homophobic, their wives turned a blind eye to their chauvinism, it was hideous. At the time I was toying with the idea of going onto the police graduate programme. This might completely changed my view. I’d hope that this incident in Basingstoke is isolated. | | | |

You can imagine the same talk in the armed services, the fire service etc. You can imagine the sarcastic, condescending immature comments about women, just for example. I have even seen a few on here (female commentators being better to look at etc). A few on here denouncing these officers, have also posted about women being attractive etc. Is this the same thing that is going on in work places? The world and people are also very hypocritical. A few posters on here annoyed about these sexist officers, have also posted how they like female commentators because they are attractive. Same thing right? [Post edited 8 Jan 2021 19:34]

I'm not sure if they'd been Tory MPs, they'd have attracted quite so many policemen.

I’ve worked in the prison service for a number of years and it was a place where homophobia, racism, sexism wasn’t tolerated. If I’m being honest, much to my surprise. Maybe it’s a power thing, prison officers have little power but do have each other’s back and there is an understanding and appreciation that you need to have different demographics for things to be controlled amicably.

I will happily say a bird on SKY is fit but wouldn’t use sexist language in front of women at work, that makes me a hypocritical snake.

| Local Constabulary on 10:09 - Jan 9 with 1266 views | kernow | It is perfectly acceptable for a red blooded, heterosexual male to comment that a female whatever is more appealing and pleasant to observe. In the case of football tv punditry, I can't identify a single male who is in any way attractive or informative. | | | |

Where exactly can you draw the line though? Is it OK to hate a commentator's horrible shrill voice and say so if she happens to be a woman (not because she is a woman)? If someone is easy on the eye, is it not OK to acknowledge that? People dress, have their hair styled, wear perfumed products and maybe make up in order to be more attractive. If it is Ok to do that, why is it not Ok to acknowledge it? That is not the same thing as putting people down or denying them opportunities in certain areas or jobs because of their sex, skin colour, genetic origin or sexual orientation, nor is it the same as breaking social boundaries on physical contact. I attend an old gits metal workshop, where 55-60% of the people are women. It is a great place to be where people push the boundaries of knowledge and experience, helping each other to design and make things in what could be a dangerous environment that they could never have done previously. Most of the "workshop" banter originates with the women, but it is all hugely amusing, given and taken in good spirit. Of course, it could be that following through with the teasing, innuendo and threats has a very low percentage chance of success.
