Be the team we need to be - not the team we want to be 11:05 - Oct 11 with 1000 viewssaint901

Just listened to an interview on the BBC with Cooper, the Forest boss.

His team got a 1:1 with Villa and he was explaining that the team is not what he would like them to be but it was doing the job he put them out to do, i.e. grind out points.

Valuable lesson there I think.

We all want to see us throw players forward in a high press that switches to 100mph football once we actually have the swollen bladder. We all want to be reasonably confident that if we let in 3 goals, we can score 4.

The truth is that the team cannot do that now - and perhaps never will be able to.

We should therefore be set up to get results (and be the team we have to be) until we are safe or relatively safe and only then be the team we want to be.

Managers in the PL know this - will Ralph be heeding that advice?

A nil nil away point v Wolves or Villa would of been great.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

Err the truth is Forest scraped a home draw against a poor Villa side so no evidence that the stuff he's talking about is working or will work. Until they get some battling wins under their belts we don't need to hold up Forest and Cooper's model as one we should be looking to copy.

I agree, they started well because they paid attention to the tactical plan and they , as individuals needed to get the manager’s approval to get picked and earn more money. Now, players have fallen into (their previous?) bad habits. Not paying attention and putting themselves under needless pressure. Diallo, Elyounoussi, S Armstrong take note.

And I think I've not suggested that Mr StAnt.

I've said that we need to be a team that grinds out points against poor sides away and beats average and poor sides at home. Not rocket science.

The way RH sets us up now with high press and full backs pushed on leaves us open.

Against West Ham and Bournemouth I would happily take 2 wins or at least 4 points even if on paper we did not deserve them - a dirty scruffy win with little possession will be as valuable to us because we need to find some confidence from somewhere.

That would have been living the dream but we don't keep clean sheets any more - our last one in the league was Fraser Forster against Arsenal half a year ago. We just go out there hoping to keep the score down.

It's tough for the youngsters who have been thrown into this before they are ready. Poor Gavin Bazunu has already broken the club goalkeeping record for the number of games after Saints debut without keeping a clean sheet. While up the other end, Sekou Mara looks like he could be set for a record breaking scoreless streak of his own for a Saints striker at the start of his career.
