Bury's situation was nothing to do with relegation or a few bad results, they had actually just been promoted to league One, so quite the opposite

He was joking,

Apart from the appointment of Russell Martin looming over us, I felt much nore optimistic about our future after the Liverpool game. I saw that we have skilful forwards who, when given the freedom to do so, can run at defenders at pace, dribble past them, shoot and score. Sam Amo-Ameyaw's debut was a pleasant surprise. He looks a great prospect and for the first time we also saw how good Sulemana can be. His second goal, when he ran three-quarters of the length of the pitch with the ball through the Liverpool team to score showed what great potential is there with the right style of football. What cost us was the silly sideways passing at the back and, of course, having the awful Alex McCarthy in goal.

Perhaps because there was no pressure and the players felt they had the freedom to play attacking football, we seemed to discover a style of play up front that suited our players: not sideways and backwards possession football in front of the opposition's defence, but fast solo runs, taking on defenders and beating them and shooting on sight. The fear is that Russell Martin is going to come in and play to our weaknesses rather than our strengths, with even more sideways and backwards passing and let's face it he's achieved nothing at either MK Dons or Swansea by doing that so far.

Agreed. For the last few months, I've always looked back at our goals after the game to see if it came from a long patient build up or just a few passes and moving the ball forward quickly. It's fair to say that us scoring after a long patient build up happens about as often as we beat Man City.

Yesterday we did actually score form a move with more than 10 passes (the first goal). The others were more typical for us:

Sulemana first goal - 1 pass
Sulemana second goal - 0 passes
A Armstrong - 0 passes

Sulemana's 2nd was from a Lyanco clearance that turned into a pass, he was given an assist for it on MOTD and in reports

OK but if you watch it back, you can see it wasn't a pass in reality. Lyanco had to react and hoofed it without looking. Sulemana did well to kill it.

As i said it was a clearance that turned out to be a good pass, whether he meant it or not it is still an assist

No it wasn't a pass. Opta and others define a pass as any intentional played ball from one player to another. It has to be intentional. Lyanco's clearance was not intended to give the ball to Sulemana, he just wanted to get rid. So it wasn't a pass, whatever some dimwit match statistician who's hardly played the game might jot down.

It was a clearance and it was an assist too. But an assist is not a pass. You can get an assist just for being fouled, or for having a shot that's saved for example. Not all assists are passes.
