The thing I found most interesting in this article is that a lot of clubs would be financially better off in League 1 than in the Championship.
And I am wondering if the Portsmouth owners have sussed this, and are quite happy for their team to go down this season.

That's a shame because we probably won't be promoted. The bookies give us about a 30% chance. Cov, Ipswich, Boro and Millwall are all rated more likely.
In reality, failing this season is bad news financially, but not an immediate disaster, but failing next year would be. Because we were only in the PL for 1 year, we only get 2 years of parachute payments. After next year, we'd be on a shoestring budget.
The article shows how important this is. In 23-24, the average wage bill for parachute clubs was £71m and for the others it was £28m. So, basically, after next year we'd have to halve our wage bill. That's massive.
In a normal year, it's very hard for non-parachute clubs to compete against the ones with the money. This year was an exception because we cocked it up and Leicester were a disaster zone. Next year will be tougher with some big clubs joining, plus Burnley who know how to get promoted.
If we don't go up by next year, we'll need an owner who is both very rich and financially stupid, or we're heading for a long term future competing at about the same level as the skates. But, more and more I wonder if that would be better that way than trying to hang on in the bottom third of the PL. | | | |
