Whilst I don't claim to be the biggest Echo And The Bunnymen fan, I do own one of their records, 2005's excellent Siberia, so when I saw their 13th lp and first for 12 years was being released, I was really interested to hear it
Before listening and doing a little bit of research I read that Clem Burke (of Blondie) played drums on most of the tracks and Will Sergeant played very little part in the recording of this lp which came as rather a surprise to me
After listening a few times ,the opening track Take Me By The Hand and especially Brussels Is Haunted sounded like what you'd expect for a Bunnymen record, what surprised me more was the reflective mood of the lyrics on tracks like An Unstoppable Force and the closing ...We Prayed In The Dark.
What I didn't expect was to hear a jaunty parping saxophone on Lab Rats Run, probably the poorest track on this 11 track lp which clocks in at 37 minutes overall
In summary, like The Fall, you know what you're getting with a Bunnymen lp. Lab Rats Run aside, it's a really good record. Plenty to like for long term fans and more casual listeners like myself and it's really great that a band, whatever version this is now, this far into their career are still making new music when they could easily fall into the greatest hits circuit and tarnish their legacy, yes I'm looking at you Shaun Ryder.

Fair appraisal of the album, their first since 2014, it has some strong tracks, but overall I see this as a Ian McCulloch solo album rather than a Bunnymen album. |  |
