Come on then
at 16:32 17 Apr 2024

Come off it - which sane professional manager puts his veteran third choice keeper ahead of his second choice and then says he wanted to see how he did? Unbelievable, does nobody have any common sense any more? Martin's certainly true to his word in wanting to take risks.

Adam and Joe on the way home

It's not Jack's fault he's a good servant for Saints but Martin's playing him out of position whilst shoe-horning him into the team. Tessem actually said as much and he's being very honest and he's right. I'm going blue in the face; but round pegs for round holes. That's the main reason why we've lost our way and Martin won't accept it when it's the simplest but best option. Tessem also talked about Stephens wrecking other positions because they don't know what to do to fill the gaps apparently Rothwell moved to left back to fill a gap yesterday - that's bonkers. Again it's not Stephens fault because he's assigned by Martin to do this. Stephens is a centre half full stop.

Is Everyone as Fed Up as Me?
at 12:37 5 Apr 2024

God yes, you just reminded me of of the good old days when we would consistently overrun teams with our attacking brilliance ( Channon, The Wallace brothers Keegan, Ball, Moran) and a sound defence ( Steel, Blyth, Waldron, Wright, Watson, Nicholl etc) but that's long behind us now. Best we can hope for is a change in a manager that is clear headed and positive. It just amazes me at how incredibly lucky some of these clueless managers get to earn millions without applying common sense consistently. It also reminds one of how incompetent the owners are in picking the right man for the job. At least look for a successful experienced manager - it really isn't complicated science.

Why we are not good enough.

I'm surprised I agree with Nick - never a truer word. And the reinstallation of a 'Division one' reserve league too please. Frankly, I miss being slaughtered 9-0 (sarcasm). Even a pathetic Sheff U didn't concede more than 6 against the Titans of the Universe, and Media-licking, Arseandall. However, we'll have to go up this year otherwise we'll dive further in debt and potential ignominy and be stuck with Martin. Martin's tactics and style will always make it 'exciting' - I'd just wish we could have the strength of character and prowess to dominate team with a sound defence, sturdy midfield and effective attack and win games 2-0 and 3-0. One can but dream. Being 'excited' every game down to the 96th minute does not bode well in truth.

Time to Change, Martin ! The Aftermath ...
at 11:31 29 Feb 2024

Played well first half and should have put away our chances - Sulemana being the most culpable, however what does anyone expect when the guy hasn't played regular first team football. But I thought he was a real threat to Liverpool that's why they brought on the first teamer right centre-half, Konate, to stop him in the second half. Konate showed his Premiership class and did stop Sulemana but why didn't Martin play Sulemana in a different position on the other side or more centrally ? Edozie was also a threat. At least Martin could have tried to swap them around. I thought Sulemana and Edozie had a great first half. More goal scoring prowess and we could easily have gone 3 up. The other strange thing about Martin's selection was that he selected two dangerous wingers but a poor centre forward - once again playing Mara from the start he looked out of his depth - missing a couple of sitters. Adams was the obvious choice for me. Chalk and cheese.

Don't start me on the suicidal knocking the ball around our box to find a non-existent solution. OK do then. Frankly if a manager persists with this strategy he doesn't deserve to be manager - just saying we're going to stick to something 1. shows a lack of reasoning 2. an inability to adapt 3. Extreme stubbornness and arrogance. Being 'brave' enough to take 'risky chances' is absurd and stupid when a team consistently loses matches with these conceits. It might, and does, work against weak teams that give you too much respect but it ain't going to win any trophies or promotion. Try that against Ipswich or Hull in the play-offs!

Thought Bree played OK except for one or two mistakes. And thought Charles played well except for a couple of mistakes. Same for Manning , same for Smallbone. Do you see the pattern here? If you ask me Saints players are trying to play an unnatural and risky style of football that they aren't technically gifted enough to play and so it will always ultimately let them down against more prepared and/or better teams. It's failed Russ; go back to 4-4-2 and play two wingers and two forwards with proper left and right backs. I'd also be quite happy to give Lumley a run of games.

8 Changes - worrying line-up against Liverpool

Come off it, Armstrong and Adams hardly had a chance - should have played from the beginning. By the time they came on Liverpool had taken ascendancy.

Absolutely, Martin takes both dangerous wingers off and pushes Mara over to the wing - surely that's nonsense.

Nobody to stick the ball away. Playing OK except the tippy-tappy around our penalty area - sorry we're not going to win any title, cup or promotion with that stupid tactic. It's too obvious and teams can just pressure us into giving the ball away. If only Stu Armstrong was on the bench we need that creativity in the middle while A Armstrong and Adams should come on straight away for the second half.

With a forward line of Edozie, Mara and Sulemana, I'm not sure who's supposed to score. Classic Martin.

To be honest I wish Perraud all the best away from the Saints. If Saints can't recall our best left back, he's better off playing somewhere else rather than suffer the confused vagaries of the present Saints management.

5 things I have noticed this week
at 10:43 25 Feb 2024

Tippy-tappy in defence is the real killer - you would have thought they'd have learnt by now.
Secondly, defensive right and left backs and a strong midfield seems obvious to me. Yet Martin's always right and Saints will continue in his style. However, this tactic may have hit a brick wall now - it's true, teams have found us out. Still, if we're not good enough to go up, I'm happy to try and rebuild (again) again in the Champ, with or without Martin, rather that than trying to rebuild for the Prem but getting hammered every other week.

Mane was a fantastic player and could play in any team - to say he didn't fit into a Saints team is absurd. I'm sure given time, and some sensible man management, Alcaraz would as well. For me it's the same old story of a player with great potential being stolen from us barely before they've got started. some of the bosses must be happy another 'big sale' fodder - who we usually fail to replace. Still, perhaps it could work this time although Rothwell is no Charlie Alcaraz.

Saints Announce Link Up With Saudi Arabian Accademy

Disappointing and terrible move by Saints owners. We should have nothing to do at all with that regime. Their limitless money alone brings a tolling bell to football let alone British football. Time for all good people to start backing local clubs and communities that having nothing to do with over-monied, murderous or fascist regimes. Football will survive the interference by these merchants of torture, exploitation, abuse and death.

Come on Birmingham, stick it out. We usually do, with awful managers, and look where it's got us! Just think how lucky you'll be with Ralph Hassenhutl. According to many Saints fans he's a great manager.

Clearly I'm talking about safety and common sense - obviously it wouldn't be a prime majority of play strategy. I'm not sure whether you've followed Saints for any length of time but McMenemy had superb attacking teams ( the best in out history) who weren't afraid to clear the ball up field when necessary. But why not use it if it's effective - Man City do. They do that and the tippy-tappy nonsense around their own goal only because they have the world class technically capable players to do it ( I sometimes think it was a trap for other teams to follow when in fact they clearly didn't have the players to use the method effectively thus allowing a high pressing Man City to easily capitalise week in week out). Man City academy product Harewood - Bellis is in that mould and plays a great long ball out of defence occasionally. On the whole we don't have the players to match up to anything City are capable of - just as it is and the facts. Anyway even teams like Liverpool, think Alisson and Ederson calamities etc, do get caught out fumbling about unnecessarily when they should have lumped the ball forward although the teams are usually good enough to make up for the mistakes - whilst teams like Saints aren't. What is it these days without people understanding common sense, the fundamentals of football and a good long paragraph?

Dreadful fumbling about from a goal kick - not auspicious but things can only get better for Jack. I wish goalies, or defenders, would just jump it up for the forwards to attack. But those days are gone apparently - days with common sense!
