As already stated, the United fans were not the nicest of people back in 76, saw one get his comeuppance after the game, he was being chased across the car park by the police and to increase his chances of getting away he started to run across the roofs of parked cars, all went well until he went through the roof of a Triumph Stag convertible and broke his leg! Carted off screaming in agony by the police.

Also remember the trip back down the M3 with those bridges packed with fans and locals who just came out to applaud. Every supporterā€™s car had silk scarves or bar scarves out of at least two windows. Never felt that sense of camaraderie you get inside a ground on a motorway before or since.

Best banner: Yellow & blue verses Manchester WHO??

Longest few minutes of my life between Stokeseyā€™s goal and the final whistle!

ā€˜Colemanballsā€™ commentary moment (from the man himself) picked up on years after the event from watching a VHS tape of the game: as the final whistle blew David Coleman said as the camera zoomed in on our keeper, ā€œIan Turner, one of eleven children who started the game nervously, has ended up a winnerā€ So,Hansen, you never win anything with kids, eh?? šŸ˜€
Good old Coleman, bless him.

Then Mick Channonā€™s testimonial on the Monday night, that was something else! Never seen so many people crammed into The Dell, watched it all from the front row of one of the Milton Road chocolate boxes. A great evening to follow a great day.

48 years ago to the minute, weā€™d not long scored the winner. Happy memories šŸ˜€āš½ļøšŸ˜€

Think this is a bit unfair to Nick. Not for the first time in recent seasons, for a lot of people, a managerial appointment was somewhat underwhelming; at the time of the appointment there were plenty of detractors, the volume of negative noise increased as a result of our run of back to back September defeats v Sunderland / Leicester/ Ipswich / Boro - through all of this Nick pleaded with all of us on multiple occasions to give RM a chance. He rightly stated that RM had walked into a chaotic situation that couldnā€™t resolve itself quickly especially whilst the transfer window was still open. Even after that it would take time so the message to everyone was give RM a chance.
Easy to say in hindsight, I was one of those underwhelmed by the appointment and unconvinced that tippy tippy is the way to win promotion. But, I gave RM a chance.
For a while it looked like I was wrong to doubt him. That said, look at us now - unrecognisableā€¦
I think a fair degree of the criticism is now justified as we have a group of players that should be capable of so much more - yes, we could still get promotion but if we do, without being uncharitable, I would contend the achievement would be despite RM not because of him.

Very good point re Wilcox. Perhaps it might hinge on who replaces Wilcox. I just hope we stop trying to be Man City minus the billions and as you say go for a far more pragmatic approach by accepting the realism what we are and where we are.

Say we get to Wembley (Iā€™ll pause for a minute whist you pick yourself back up off of the floor)ā€¦ā€¦

OK now?

and the game goes to extra time! Bear in mind four or five of our better players will have been subbed off and the rest are not fit enough. I reckon we could be overrun. Probably wonā€™t come to that anyway.

I stand to be corrected on this if I am wrong but wasnā€™t it SR who decided as a result of their period of self reflection after relegation that the club was now going to adopt this supposedly exciting new direction of possession based football, as Peter Kay said about garlic bread, itā€™s the future.

If I am correct, if they do bin BBB (had enough of his press conferences so heā€™s been upgraded from the Brighton Buddha to the Bulls@@@ting Brighton Buddha) SR will only appoint like for like IF I am correct in recalling what was said after last season ended.

Totally agree re Cooper, what a breath of fresh air that would be.

Also agree if we donā€™t get him in there will be plenty of other takers. If Ipswich go up auto and Leeds blow the play offs I can see them taking him. If Forest fail to stay up I can see them taking him back as Nuno has been underwhelming. As usual we will either stick with BBB or miss out on the best replacements, itā€™s the Southampton way donā€™t you know šŸ™‚āš½ļøšŸ˜¢

Ex playere No.96 coming back?

Good point, where are they? If we go up we face another summer of upheaval as weā€™d need a lot of new players to stand any chance of not being next seasonā€™s Sheffield Utd. Donā€™t see our Academy players getting much of a look in if that happens .
If we donā€™t go up we still face another summer of upheaval but the difference being it would make sense to give the likes of Dibling, Amo and perhaps Meghoma a chance to prove themselves. Also, what has happened to the two young players signed from Arsenal and Chelsea? the Arsenal one in particular was supposed to have massive potential.
I think the thing is since we were producing the likes of Walcott, Bale, Dyer, Ox, Shaw, Lallana ect, the so called big clubs have upped their game and have scouts / recruiters everywhere and are simply hoovering up all the best talent from under our and everyone elseā€™s noses. Just a thought, perhaps what we are left with just isnā€™t the same standard anymore thanks to the likes of the PL clubs in Lindon and beyond who recruit far more aggressively in our back yard than they did say 15 years agoā€¦

Agreed, especially if we are still in the Championship next season, as we already know to our cost, the opposition like nothing more than kicking the cr@p out of anything they perceive as a threat on the day.
Also, given his history, wouldnā€™t Ox go to the Sk8ā€™s in preference to us? Seem to remember there was a bit of noise when Ox was last with us because his Dad was a Sk8 player and wasnā€™t keen on him playing for us in preference to them. They might just take an interest now they have been promoted.
In any event I agree heā€™s done for and the rigours of either the Prem or the Championship would mean his time on the pitch would be limited and probably for a high wage.

Can't disagree with anything you have said above TS.

As I have said on anothet post, without a massive upturn in form we will just be play off cannon fodder.

Who's staying behind for the lap of honour post-Stoke game??

PS: When I checked this post for typos it said play odd cannon fodder, not play off, nearly didn't chhange it!

Re your final sentence: Add to it, and probably won't be there next season.

The performance tonight reminded me of some of the latter performances of the season offered up by the Saints team that Redkrapp took down, and that's quite a damning indictment of any Saints team but that's how it felt to me tonight.

Donā€™t let your backside hit the door on your way out Russell Martin.

You might think someone of senioity amongst the players (albeit, we have no real leaders) would call a team meeting behind closed doors where a collective decisiom could be made to ignore the tippy tappy instructions and just go for the throat in the play offs. Martin can't drop the entire team for failing to play to his half baked Plan A. If it falls flat then from what I have seen the last two games we'd be no worse off than we are playing the way we are now. Just a thought...

Sad to say, we will just be Play-Off cannon fodder unless there is a massive upturn which I just can#t see happening at the moment. RM is a busted flush with no Plan B as has been said a hundred times by many different forum posters. Gutted.

Remember Tony Barton at Aston Villa? Villa won the Europeam Cup in 1982 and the Super Cup as well but Barton didn't get the credit he deserved as he wasn't high profile and the general attitude a lot of the media experts / pundits took was Villa had such a good squad of players anyone could have managed them to EC success. In some respects with the squad we had this season I felt that the same should apply so I was not that worried when Martin was appointed. In hindsight, how wrong I was, and how right you are in what you have said above.

https://www.flashscore.co.uk/match/4jI7yxbf/#/match-summary/lineups

McCarthy starts in goal, still no Downes, Rothwell & Charles get starts, Smallbone benched, Capt Jack & Manning benched, Bednarek starts as does Bree.

No nippers starting but some on the bench.
