Southampton At Bristol City The Verdict
at 17:23:25

Our problems have always been rooted in defence, though you can't blame individuals.
Teams that attack us -regardless of personnel -will cause us a problem, and this has been apparent in some of our narrow victories, draws and even some of those games we managed to make look one sided by numbers -the Thornhills for example.
When we defend from the front, protecting a vulnerable defence, press or counter in numbers and at pace we can usually win. We must not go back into our shell, if we play, we're better.
Simple, if we don't we won't go up automatically, and may struggle getting to -or out of- the playoffs.

Southampton V Watford The FA Cup Replay Preview
at 19:36:50

Intelligent comments on here -as per.
Hate to say it, but looks to this fan that our club have disregarded or overlooked us yet again with a further roll of the dice in this competition.
We have to hope that the players have learnt more than the management, or that we don't incur too many injuries as the later substitutions bust a gut getting us through.
I do hope I've got this wrong.

Russell Martin Take A Bow
at 13:34:28

I like your list of managers Nick, and would say that I would agree on the Puel comments too, and definitely add Dave Merrington and maybe Alan Ball and Chris Nicholl ahead of him. Russell Martin would do well to heed the comments of a thinking fanbase too. Merrington sneaks in your list for me for what he did individually for players too, and what this meant in the longer term for this club. Bally and Nicholl much the same, even though poor Chris was unaware at the time, he oversaw a slow dismantling of a great team and tradition, which has taken years in the rebuilding, with many an unnecessary bump in the road since.

Russell Martin Take A Bow
at 13:16:11

Any team with big time aspirations -and why not us -would've needed a good and sustained run after that poor period. I do believe the team /squad and manager has improved through the season, and I do believe a better style has evolved. So many elements seem to be coming together. Credit for this progress is acknowledged, but full on plaudits only when they are due please -whatever your own agenda for the various shades of naysayers.
This season's activity so far can only be likened to dragging your heels at the start of a marathon (even going off course?), and starting to speed up (nearing a sprint, even getting a 10k PB?) in the middle when most will know -I certainly do -that the toughest part of the race is still ahead of us.
It is after all, more of a marathon than a sprint isn't it?

Southampton Mourns The Passing Of Another 1976 FA Cup Hero
at 12:57:11

Rest in Peace Saint Mel.

One of Lawrie Mac's earlier signings.
Arguably, one of his most astute -and that's saying something -and underrated, though not by the Saints fans of the day, who voted him player of the season in his first. A great servant and hero at Crystal Palace too.

Saints To Take Midfielder On Loan From Bournemouth
at 12:47:42

With only so many slots available for loans and even full signings, this looks like one just to placate or confuse the fanbase. Another one I don't get. Maybe he's just come to keep his mate company. Hope we've got more room for more goal productivity, even though we seem to have addressed this more recently with the 'Thornhill Streak' -we do love a local reference.

That doesn't look bad BowlerCow.
Both Stephens and Charles made errors that would have been punished by more competent opponents last time out. Those problems may be ironed out with Charles but I think Stephens is too far gone.

Southampton FC Finally Realise That Their Stripes Are Iconic

Typical Saints listening to some marketing speak rather than their own wise fans.
Personally, I will only buy a red and white striped shirt anyway which perversely they don't sell in the 'Saints Megastore ' (sic)

How can we help?
Don't leave early, stay and maintain the momentum and atmosphere. Chances are you may miss a valuable goal otherwise. Make a difference, otherwise what's the point of another full house (or full section away)?

Southampton At Sunderland The (Damning) Verdict
at 09:31:25

Saints were beaten in all departments in speed of thought and deed.

All that from a round the clock and grizzled old stager and his willing and enthusiastic proteges.
Not by a fresh faced student of the game who refuses to adapt or change -I do hope I am wrong. Deja vu -is this the third time in a year or so?

I believe we do have a decent squad, but the progression of that last game showed few signs of any form of rallying to our cause. Exclusive reliance on the 'tipi tapi' method makes us sitting ducks and will only propel us further on our previous trajectory.
I thought we were beginning to exorcise our surrender mentality by replying in kind with goals, but it's worrying reappearance means it could still be endemic.
Football's simple, we do need to shore up the defence, get a more active and fluid, non porous midfield and not have our valuable goal potential spending too much time reposing (rotting) on bench or sick beds. Like the players Martin needs to respond much more quickly before this continues as a malaise, and the rot sets in again.

Nathan Tella Joins Bayer Leverkusen
at 18:28:24

Only Lavia currently ranks anywhere near Tella as the player we never saw the best of -I do hope it works out for both of them. I know SR have been scurrying around trying to get the best return on their commodity. Retrospectively, this along with the Adams decision could be a post PL penny pinching exercise we may live to regret. It seems to have crept into our MO in recent years that we sell off our guaranteed goals -and the cost could continue to be colossal. Otherwise, forgive me saying that never in the field of football comnflict have so many forgettable footballers been employed for so much and given so little. We have already forgotten some of them.

Saints Launch New 3rd Kit For 2023/24 Season
at 15:30:39

It's the right colours, just the wrong way around.
Far too expensive, as well.
Would be interested to see if Saints could do an offer on additional purchases of second and third shirts -a family offer, or even buy two get one free?
Come on, it's high time someone came back within our orbit on these prices.
"Scandalous!", he cried, especially during the school holidays.

Salisu Set To Leave Southampton For London

Don't like comparisons, but a bit more Lemina than Reed.
Now that was a strange virtual double signing when that happened wasn't it?
Still think he could do a job for us whilst learning, but will watch this one with interest.

Newcastle To Say Take It Or Leave It For Tino Livramento
at 15:16:42

Saints have done everything right so far in nurturing this boy's recovery. I'm trusting that Tino is aware of this, and wants to continue getting his return right. In the circumstances, and possibly of interest and benefit to the third party is a significant purchase and loan back.

Southampton V Bournemouth The Pre Season Preview
at 15:09:00

Significant in your line up, is that with all the potential comings and goings yet to fully decimate us, you have managed to retain the 'so solid crew' in central defence. Rather than stick with two younger improving centre backs Southampton Football Club have conspired alongside your 'tired' selection of retaining the services of the only two players left standing that managed to concede 18 goals in those two games. Progress Southampton style. This depresses me more than playing B'muff -especially when we could've all fitted in at their cosy little space.

Southampton At Reading The Preview
at 16:23:55

I'd like to see a committed team effort for this fixture, worthy of the virtual death or glory approach that has to be applied in the Championship.
I trust the manager doesn't pander to the stroke it around till I get a move prima donnas from the off. The fans will back this, so drop them, move them on if you can. See through any such charade from the get go -no more passengers on this bus (Nigel Adkins tribute).
In my opinion it was a combination of this complacency and bad overall man management that got us unnecessarily relegated.
Whilst many of us have been spoilt by the likes of Le Tiss, Osgood and Worthington who so often made things look effortless, we also know that top players still need to put a shift in, as typified by Armstrong the original and Shilton, Holmes, Keegan, Ball and Channon. Hope this mere mention makes a lot of my fellow fans feel all warm inside. Long hard season ahead, so might as well start with proper intent at the Berkshire reality check.

Ex Saints Star Claims Southampton Are Asking A Fair Price For Nathan Tella
at 08:30:14

Should they stay or should they go now? The dilemmas that could shape or shaft us for the immediate future, probably beyond. With the question marks over Tella et al, it really can be a random throw of the dice in amongst all the wheeling and dealing. Older Saints fans will smile that Carlton Palmer's name has cropped up in this conversation, as his unlikely visage used to appear amongst the thoroughbreds and superstars with Saints and England -and others -back in the day. Only hope is we can find someone with his drive, desire and combative energy to gel and complement the all too present 'talent'.
