What's gone wrong with our support?
at 16:19 28 Nov 2021

It's all part of the emasculation of football!

The thing I miss is the humour (not always appropriate). I remember watching Saints Chelsea on Boxing Day 1979 (or 1980 - can't remember!) and a song directed at Ron "Chopper" Harris to the tune of Jesus Christ Superstar alluding to his sexuality. It was hysterical but it just wouldn't happen today.

No one abuses the officials any more - is it because "who's the w*nker in the black? is ow deemed racist. It's no surprise they can get away with being so rubbish if they don't have fans on their backs for the whole game.

Maybe I'm just getting old but I find going to games really depressing now because the experience is so boring.

The asylum system is clearly not fit for purpose. However, genuine asylum seekers need to apply on UK soil (clearly, it would be better if we had processing centres on the continent) but surely they could do this at any British Embassy in the EU (as they are on British soil.

I worry that many people let migrants off the hook by saying how desperate they are. Are they that desperate to leave the EU to come to the UK that they wilfully put they own and their children's lives at risk. I get it if they are crossing from Syria into Turkey for example or at a stretch from Turkey to Greece but once they get to the EU they are safe.

There is a lot of coast but you can use technology to spot people getting into these dangerous boats - drones with infra-red and night vision. Ideally you'd get them on the beaches but if they get onto the sea then use the navy/coast-guards/lifeboats to intercept them before they reach the dangerous shipping lanes and international waters. Also, it is more dangerous getting in a boat about to cross the channel rather than getting off the afore-mentioned boat on a British beach. It is also clear that the French trying to measure this in terms of boats stopped is not the right measurement - the better measure is how many boats get through. The whole point is to stop people setting off on these dangerous journeys in the first place and it is clear that the French have long had no interest in stopping them.

In terms of law, if you put your child on one of these boats it is reckless endangerment. I would go so far as to say that if you put your children deliberately in harm's way then there is no way you deserve asylum or a visa - maybe that would stop people from attempting these journeys.

FYI - my grand-mother was a refugee in WW1, WW2 and the Balkan war so I'm not impervious peoples' genuine need to migrate. However, paying thousands to people smugglers to "escape" from the safety of the EU to the safety of the UK is morally reprehensible

....and you believe Macron? I never liked Blair but Macron is like an incompetent version.

I'm no supporter of Johnson but this tragedy is of the French authorities' making:

1) Their response to smugglers wandering freely round the camps is laughable. I suspect that some French police may be in the pay of the smuggler gangs;
2) The way they treat migrants is a disgrace. They claim to be paragons of culture and civilisation but you only have to look at they way migrants, and in fact any non-white French people are treated;
3) They say it is not their responsibility to police UK borders. True - but it is their responsibility to police their own borders. They can quote all the statistics they want but they are simply not doing a good enough job. Their sovereignty ends at International waters - not the beaches;
4) The reaction to Johnson's comment (which is not unreasonable) has been pathetic and childish. Do you really think Macron wants to solve this issue?

To be honest, I'm getting tired of the one-sided blinkered view some posters put on here - at least think before you post!

The French need to take responsibility now.
at 09:02 26 Nov 2021

The joke that sums up the French:

Why are the roads in France all lined with trees? So the Germans could march in the shade.

The sad thing is that this is a solvable problem - it appears no one really wants to solve it. The EU's immigration policy has been a shambles for years, the French play politics with people's lives (even the Byelorussians treat migrants better than the French) and Boris and his cronies try and use stick rather than carrot, together with inflammatory language.

Plus the migrants themselves need to share some responsibility. After all it is them that pay the smugglers, them that believe they have a right to settle in the UK, them that get on the dinghies. It's one thing to want to reach safety and leave a horrific war torn country, it's quite another to pay smugglers thousands to leave the EU to come to the UK.

The French need to take responsibility now.
at 13:02 25 Nov 2021

This is multi layered and the responsibility lies as follows (in order):

1) The people smugglers. These are organised gangs and the authorities across the EU and the UK need to be acting swiftly to close them down - they must know who they are;
2) The French authorities. They have blood on their hands from the way they treat migrants to police watching them leave. Plus the pathetic excuses - they could patrol the beaches much more effectively if they used tech appropriately - have they not heard of drones? Why aren't they using military capabilities? Macron has played a despicable game and needs to be held to account;
3) The UK government. We should dial down the rhetoric but also encourage the EU to set up assessment centres for asylum claims to the UK. Setting them up in Calais or Dunkirk is too late - they also need to be further back in the chain, say in Germany, Italy, Belgium etc. We also need to process asylum claims more quickly;
4) The people crossing. What sort of person thinks it's ok to take a child on a small, over-crowded boat to cross the Channel at any time of year - let alone in winter? The resources they are wasting with no regard to the safety of lifeboatmen, border force officials etc. is also really selfish.

Maybe our goalies get a bonus for keeping clean sheets and Gao wants to save some money so has instructed Ralph to play McCarthy come what may.

Get Setwell and Johnstone in. Time is up for McCarthy and Forster. Thanks for your service and bye bye!

What really gets me is the hypocrisy of the FA, media, players etc. If they actually believed what they say about inclusion etc. then this would be the time to stand by their words. But no, it's ok to blame English and European fans whenever there's an issue but if there is a threat to the gravy train then all are curiously silent.

Bring in Setford and Johnstone and I would be happy - one for now and one for the future. I would also like to then see Forster in a mentoring role as a senior, experienced international who has faced many demons.

I don't follow F1 either but if you're using them as a comparison it's a bit desperate as they are the epitome of a sport which only has money at heart!

Elite sports have an option to try and set a morale standard and awarding the World Cup to Qatar clearly flew in the face of this. I think they should be doing this as should so-called leading media organisations such as the BBC. Their whole rhetoric on the Qatar World Cup and the Saudi take over of Newcastle has been fawning and weak.

I'm not a fan of taking a knee. On Saturday the players literally just dropped to their knees and stood up again - a pointless and pathetic gesture. The only way to make change is by taking significant actions - such as the WTA seem to be doing with China.

Lineker is a hypocritical, biased cvnt. I don't understand why you are supporting him.

There is no way I will watch any of the games in Qatar - it's an absolute disgrace that it is being held there and I would be more than happy if England boycotted it. Any player/coach/etc. that goes should get maximum abuse for going. This world cup has highlighted the horrible hypocrisy that exists in elite level football.

I think conflating Ralph and Gao is incorrect. Whilst Ralph has weaknesses, there are also some positives which means that, on balance, I am happy to give him more time.

Gao is another matter. Under Gao's ownership we have regressed. The best anyone can say is that he's done nothing! Frankly, that's pathetic. The choice often given is either Gao or an Ashley style or some dodgy regime as owners. However, as I've mentioned before, I would love to see us with a Brighton style of ownership - one with a better link to the community and city, which we can all emotionally engage in.

Well run businesses are stable because they are well run - not the other way round!

3) No leader on the pitch

Ralph not be a great manager but I can't see a better alternative for us.
