Last Few Days Of Phoney Transfer Window
at 22:01:04

I am not going to moan about transfers/lack of transfers until the season starts. I fear the worst but you never know - maybe this time we will buy some good players. In certain departments they won't have to be that good to be improvements.

Jan Bednarek Set To leave Southampton
at 23:26:35

Not the first CB I would have chosen to go. Another one that needs replacing and, whatever his limitations, this guy is an experienced player. When Nick lists the replacement options I only see one good (but inexperienced) player and several who are either useless or yet to prove themselves.

JB did alright for us and I wish him well.

Matthew Le Tissier Speaks Out About His Beliefs
at 11:48:33

ChristchurchSaint: You say " These days, we are not allowed to air our views in public". MLT just did and I hear no end of Ricky Gervaise, Laurence Fox, John Cleese etc etc. sharing their views with us. We should all have the right to air our views in a free society and we should all expect to be criticised by those who disagree with us.

Matt said some things that some people, including his employer, objected to. Should he have lost his role at the club? "Ambassadors" are supposed to represent everyone would be my view. I believe I am right in saying that most of us who objected to Matt's comments weren't denying his right to say them. I believe it is right that sometimes there are consequences.

If there is a too narrow range of 'acceptable' views in this country I would say that it is by no means biased towards the liberal. The Mail (most read 'news' website in the world), the Express, The Sun and thousands of non-liberal on-line sites are being read by millions and they are not 'cancelled' by anyone.

We nearly always keep to very civilized discourse on this site which is why I like it and feel able to express views like the above. I wouldn't on a general social media site because I haven't got time to read all the abuse...I know that, say, half of regular TUI posters will disagree with me but that's good. It would be pretty pointless and boring if we all agreed!!!

Matthew Le Tissier Speaks Out About His Beliefs
at 10:23:17

Nice one felly!! Your second paragraph sums it up wonderfully.

This is all social media stirred culture wars stuff. MLT seems to me to be a simple soul who happens to be quite famous so right-wing people interview him. Who has heard of 'Rob Moore' or cares about what he thinks? My advice to MLT (worthless of course because no one cares what I think either - and why should they) is that those who disagree with you think you are demeaning yourself and those that agree with the stuff you come out with are exploiting you...

Pope In Line For Goalkeeping Job At St Mary's
at 23:00:56

I heartily agree with all of the above anti play out from the back comments. Even with the better teams I see more goals conceded from cock-ups than sweeping moves up the pitch that actually score. A boot up the field, just like Ian Turner in 76, is more likely to get a goal in my view.

Oh and yes - Pope would be a great signing.

Yes - you need to go on the evidence. I think it is right that the club looked into this and, given available evidence, they have made the right decision.

Che Adams Linked To Leeds United
at 10:56:11

A timely reminder that as well as a 'clean sweep' of those we want rid of, those we want to stay might go too. Is Che in that latter category? Second-guessing whatever the hell Ralph is thinking is not easy but Che suddenly going out of favour does not bode well. I think he is a good second striker and he works hard but, as we are about to find out, what any of us think matters not a jot.

The paradox is that players like A. Armstrong and Che need extended runs in the team but if they aren't scoring then they quickly disappear. The number one priority is an Ings-like player who will guarantee a certain goals-per-minute on the pitch. Then only 7 from the second striker isn't so much of an issue. I hope Che stays - I suspect he will go if he thinks he can get more time on the pitch under a manager with a clear idea of where he is going from one day to the next...

Southampton v Liverpool The Verdict
at 11:20:06

Dirk - Che's winner at the Spuds was a header.

I saw no 'battling'. I did wonder if Ralph thought that Leeds had won on Sunday and therefore keeping the score down was important. The whole thing was thoroughly depressing. Elyounoussi's 'performance' summed it up. I didn't even realise he was playing until he set up the winner with a neat near-post flick. Several other players also proved they need to be moved on. The recall of 'Near Post' in goal was every bit as successful as most of us expected. Anyway, KWP excepted, you could run through most of the team with negative comments. Liverpool reserves were poor last night and they still beat us comfortably. It isn't good enough - if that is all we deserve then , well, how miserable...

As for the manager: Where are we going under him? Where is the progress? Why do we have these lengthy runs of abysmal form/results? Our slightly fluky win over Arsenal is all that, in the end, kept us from last-day trauma. Does Ralph has a plan? Has he players in mind to come in? Will he get them and then look as if he knows what he is doing. I don't like seeing managers sacked but can anyone honestly feel that 'yes' is a likely answer to any of those questions???

Southampton Unity needed Now With Safety Assured
at 11:15:54

Whether you are a 'glass half full' or 'half empty' or totally full or totally empty and all points in between you can only go on what you view on the pitch over 40+ games in a season. I enjoyed the 'highs' (win at Spuds being the highlight) but have to say there were too many 'lows'. If we had lost that home game to Arsenal we would now be in the thick of it. It is not over-pessimistic to say that if we lurch along like we have been the roller-coaster will end up with relegation rather than Europe.

Right up to Chris Nicholl's departure in 1991 we were a club that stuck with our managers and I think it is quite refreshing that we have given Ralph time. The reaction at Brentford shows that the fans feel that we are now at the stage where he has had enough time. If he stays we need to be getting a strong idea of where we are going SOON. I am in the camp whose patience has nearly run out. Puel was sacked for being boring but it was a 'boring' that got 48 points and a cup final despite losing Fonte and Van Dick half-way through. By the autumn Ralph will have had THREE more years than Puel...A vital summer ahead methinks.

You've missed out the game that Liverpool still had to play at home to Norwich (who knowing them were probably already relegated). I think it finished 1-1 but Liverpool would probably have won it if they needed to.

Big Night In Premier League Relegation Battle
at 14:42:42

"this evening they will find out whether they were right to be worried". No, No, No. This evening our worries will either be over or will continue - we are/were right to worry, or at least be reasonably concerned. If Leeds even draw tonight then there is a realistic chance we will go down. Both Leeds and Burnley finish with games they may well win and we finish with games we will probably lose. Burnley also have a shot to nothing at Spuds (we won there so it is not impossible). It is unlikely that we will go down but it is possible enough, and those who are a bit worried should not to be ridiculed.

Southampton At Brentford The (Damning) Verdict
at 11:42:26

"too many of the squad perhaps suspect or even know they have no future at St Mary's, that in the summer changes will be made by the new owners". We have to hope that is the case as there are no other excuses that exclude Ralph from taking the blame.

I like Ralph, he seems as genuine as you ever get in football and clearly cares. The trouble is that Nick's report is actually a damning indictment of Ralph. He is, after all, the leader and will have been with us 4 years come the autumn. His was labelled Klopp of the Andes, or wherever, when he arrived and he seems to live in a world where he is managing a Liverpool quality squad. When the Liverpool fullbacks are caught ten miles up the pitch they have Van Dick to help them out, we have Bednarek whose turning circle is slower than the Queen Mary's.

The simple question I ask is what is so special about Ralph that absolves him from the consequences of the kind of thing we saw on Saturday? The Guardian comments today that his reputation far exceeds his results. I know some say that we should just be pleased to stay up and win a couple of cup matches but that isn't Ralph's self-image/philosophy. If we want a manager to do that then there are specialists around who (nearly) always succeed.

Ralph needs to turn things round quickly. I would give him one more summer and tell him that we have to show more consistency and cohesion in the months before Christmas. The danger is that Ralph supervises wholesale player changes, we start dreadfully and he gets sacked, but there are always dangers - the biggest for us is that we go on like we are. Next season the highs like the win at Spuds may not compensate for the lows. We will only stay up by a point or two this season and are left relying on others to lose even this late. Next season we may not be so lucky.

9th Or 17th That Is the Story Of Saints Last Two Weeks Of The Season
at 15:52:03

The Ralph debate is surely all about our expectation for the Saints. I think we need to be more consistent next season. Level out the sharp ups and downs and eliminate the fiascos like Chelsea.

As for relegation - 40pts might be enough, but I could see Burnley getting there and Everton too. Leeds need 7 pts from 4 games to get above us - unlikely but not impossible. If Ralph wants us to love him again he could start by beating Brentford...

What Does Next Season Hold For Armando Broja
at 11:15:12

Difficult one - but largely not in our hands. Offer Chelsea 10m and if they say no then look elsewhere is one option. I don't like the idea of another loan. That means that we are doing Chelsea's work for them. Let's get someone in who can work with Adams - and Alan Armstrong for that matter. Ralph presumably has a view on all this...Broja has been a reflection in miniature of Saints' up and down season. Occasionally great but more often poor.

Southampton V Crystal Palace The Verdict
at 19:14:55

Hi ItchenNorth - I get what you are saying but I just don't see that Ralph (or any other manager) will be 'backed'. And as you say if he does suddenly start over-achieving he will on the bus to a 'bigger' club. All part of the fun of being a Saints fan!! Perhaps we should just make sure we stay up before we plan too much for next year...
