 | News Comment | Portsmyth Or Portsmouth Innit ? Take Our M27 Derby Weekend Quiz at 12:21:14
If anyone has the time or inclination, go into the main library in Southampton & Portsmouth and ask to see the microfilches of the Daily Echo/Portsmouth News. The truth about the 'Dock Strike' is there in black & white. In black and white the story is there to be read. In 1976 Portsmouth main Commercial Docks opened (the Council are actually celebrating the 50th anniversary in June this year. At the time Portsmouth port workers were not part of the National Dock Labour Scheme but were represented on the South Coast Port Workers Committee of which a guy by the name of Richie Pearce (a Southampton Shop Steward) was the Chairman. A number of South Coast Ports agreed not to steal work off other ports. Pompey Dockers renegaded on this agreement in November 1976 and agreed to work a Brittany ferry ship which normally went into Plymouth. Hundreds of Southampton Dockers went down to picket Pompey Commercial Docks and the Hampshire Police had to be called out to protect the Pompey Dockers who were subject to chants of 'Scum' as a consequence of their breaking an agreement. Ironically the strike breaking finger pointing was then reversed and Southampton Dockers became the bad guys. All elements of this story is there in print unlike other so called 'alternative facts' A relative of mine went to school in Fareham back in the 1960's where there was around 50/50 Pompey/Saints fans who used to get on OK together. He reckoned there was never any stories about Dock Strikes then nor did he hear the word 'Scummer' used. |
 | News Comment | A Rough Guide To Northampton at 09:19:23
I remember going to the previous Northampton stadium (County Ground?) in the 1960's. It was basically a three sided ground with one side having a small terrace which was moveable as Northants cricket club shared the space. Sheffield Utd was the only other club with a three sided ground until it was redeveloped. |
 | News Comment | Russell Martin Sees Sekou Mara As A Long Term Option at 19:00:50
Not sure about Mara but he is young and he may be a player for the future. In comparison Dom Ballard. albeit 3 years younger, has been touted by some as worth a run in the first team but he is not exactly pulling up trees at Reading. |

I was there. Pay at the gate but our car load of supporters managed to blag our way into the main stand for free. |
 | News Comment | Grimsby Tickets On Sale But There Are Website Issues at 20:28:34
In some respects I am glad I am not the only one unable to buy my season ticket and am unable to visit the stadium or phone in tomorrow before the ridiculously short timeframe. Probably wont bother going now!! |
 | News Comment | My 50th Year Anniversary Of Watching Saints Today at 10:45:05
Well done Nick, keep it up. One of my first games at The Dell was a FA Youth Cup Semi Final (1st Leg) v Man Utd in 1956 . . Saints had Terry Paine & John Sydenham on the wings whereas Man Utd had quite a few of the team that were involved in the Munich air disaster 2 years later, including the colossus that was Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton etc. We lost 5-2 but actually beat them 1-0 in the second leg at Old Trafford. I remember Man Utd were wearing new shiny kit whereas our youngsters were turned out in hand me down shirts etc which looked washed out in comparison. I had been to earlier games as we lived for a while in Milton Road but your reference to Man Utd brought back memories of the Youth team game. |
