Smallbone off?
at 12:32 9 Aug 2023

This is bad news. Smallbone is future captain material. Why he would want to go to a team that will struggle all season is a mystery to me, but I guess the PL and a hefty pay-rise would tempt anyone. I just hope we get a decent amount as £7m implies that he is the quarter of the player JWP is - right now I would say there is little to choose.

Can someone tell me why
at 08:17 16 Mar 2023

I honestly thought it was wind-up when someone told me before the game that Elyounoussi and Diallo were playing. Just what is it about these guys? Do they have something in their contracts that says they have to start 90 per cent of our games? All our worst performances this season have come when these two are on the pitch. We were coming off the back of two decent results so what do we do..? We drop our best player and a rejuvenated Walcott for these two! If Lavia and Theo aren't fit they shouldn't be on the bench. I am convinced that had we started with the same side we played against United we would not have lost that game last night.

For the record I don't actually think Elyounoussi and Diallo are bad players - on an away trip to Man City or Arsenal with damage limitation in mind it might make sense but in a must-win home game FFS??? I just have no words anymore.

The great escape is pure fantasy now; even if we beat Spurs we've left ourselves too much to do. At least James Bree might find his level in the Championship because he looks about as good a Premier League player as Nathan Jones looked a Premier League manager. And how poor must the Belgian league be for Tall Paul to score that many goals. There are better players playing Sunday League.

How?.......
at 09:18 2 Mar 2023

I can only really echo everything posted in this thread. I have always thought we had a squad good enough to drag us out of this mess but on last night's showing Selles needs to speak to every one of our players individually and find out which are up for a fight and which just want out. Only JWP, KWP, Lavia and Perraud showed any intent last night (even the ageing Walcott put some of our World Cup "stars" to shame), the rest of them treating it like one big training session. It was like the Forest game all over again, only even more embarassing.

I actually think it would be best if we go down this year. If by some miracle we survive we will only have another season like this to look forward to next year. But if we do get relegated we can dump those players who are only here for the ride and rebuild with a decent young squad that actually cares, and which plays for the shirt and not their next paycheck.

It's a no from Marsch
at 09:20 16 Feb 2023

Oh dear, this is getting silly now. I actually thought Sport Republic knew what they were doing by considering Marsch, who would have been a reasonable mid to long-term appointment, got the team playing attractive football again and given us half a chance of bouncing back from the Championship next season. But no manager worth his salt is going to accept such a short-term offer: taking on a task they are almost bound to fail at, with the prospect of being unemployed in six months with a relegation added to their CV. I can only think SR are living in some kind of dream world where we grab three or four quick wins and end up in mid-table. Wake up and small the coffee, guys - relegation is happening! If you're looking for a sticking plaster / rescue act you need to call Sam Allardyce or Harry Redknapp, who might do it for the crack and some extra retirement spending money.

On the plus side, Selles will hopefully now get the job until the season, which is probably what should have happened in the first place. From what I gather he is well-respected, the players seem to like him and for him it's a shot to nothing - it won't be down to him if we go down but if he can turn things around he can make a name for himself so has lots to gain and nothing to lose.

Marsch will work out - Give him a chance
at 13:59 14 Feb 2023

I've given up trying to judge Saints' managerial appointments, but Marsch has a great CV - seems to have won things with nearly every club he has been with - and did keep Leeds up last season. OK, things went wrong this season but I'm convinced Leeds have a weaker squad than us. I would personally have kept Selles in charge for the rest of the season but JM does at least feel like a breath of fresh air right now. Could be fun if both the players and supporters take to him - certainly a lot more likeable than that Welsh bloke.

When a manager starts saying "we need a bit of luck" the game is pretty much up I'm afraid.

Can it get any worse
at 08:39 5 Jan 2023

Last night was as bad as anything I ever saw under Branfoot. Tactically clueless in attack, a shambles defensively. NJ Is hopelessly out of his depth. What was worst was a complete lack of passion - with the possible exception of Lavia and KWP most of the players looked like they were thinking of which clubs they will sign for when we go down. Somehow NJ has transformed a half-decent quad into a League 1 side in a matter of weeks (we would struggle to win games in the Championship playing like that).

I can't believe I'm saying this but the owners need to admit their mistake, sack Jones and bring in Dyche. If nothing else he'll inject some fight into the players and when we go down we'll have half a chance of coming back up again with SD in charge, otherwise we're only heading one way.

Manuel Pellegrini.

Pellegrini = Pulling power to attract decent players and retain some of those we have. Also wants to stay in the UK and has a big point to prove. Would be a good choice in my eyes.

De Boer and Moyes would be OK, I guess.

Howe's a great coach but we need to be looking for the big name if we're serious about progressing.

Hard to think of anyone else suitable without someone appearing out of left-field.

Is Koeman an 'honourable man'
at 10:23 4 Jun 2016

New to this forum so 'hi' everyone!

I think he's an honourable man at heart but I guess anyone would think twice when a cheque for £6 million is waved under their nose. Don't really blame him for that but just surprised he wants to gamble on a couple of seasons at an under-performing club when he could have one more great season with us before taking up his rightful place as Barca boss.
