Pellegrino Reveals That Saints Are Looking At New Signings
Friday, 4th Aug 2017 11:30 by Nick Illingsworth

All those pessimists who have been claiming that Saints are not intending bringing in anymore players this transfer window are way off the mark as Mauricio Pellegrino has revealed.

Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted that bringing in the players that you want has not been easy this transfer window with the club having narrowly failed to land a couple of their targets over the last few weeks.

However the manager has not given up hope yet and says that the club are still actively looking for a new signing or two.

Quoted on the Daily Echo

“We are studying the market.

“We have got some options and always we can improve the squad.

“We will keep going and after we will wait to see what happens.”

Pellegrino spoke of his frustrations in the transfer market so far. But that he was hopeful that there would be new additions to the squad.

“The market is difficult, a lot of important teams are challenging for the best players.

“We are confident that someone can come.”

So those who claim that Saints do not intend to bring in a new signing or two are way off the mark, some of those claim that because they believe that the failure of the Chinese takeover to materialise has meant the club could not spend money due to the uncertainty and some say so because despite four great seasons in a row, they cannot accept that the club is getting things right and seem to believe we are on a path to doom.

I'm sorry to end this article on such a note, but the aura around St Mary's for the past four summers as been one of negativity amongst a bigger section of the fan base than it should have been, some almost revel in being able to moan on social media about where the club is going wrong and how it has no ambition.

I can understand why people were worried in the summer of 2014 when we lost a big section of our first team and did not have a large squad to back it up, but now our strategy has allowed us to build a squad and take our club to a level that four years ago we could only dream of.

This time back in 2013 after a year in which we almost went straight back down to the Championship we were not optimistic and perhaps with good reason, now we should be and have right to be, but the air is not one of optiism, but complete negativity, supporters of all the clubs below us last season wonder what planet we are on, they see Saints as an example of what every club outside of the top six aspires too, both in the way we are run, but also what we have achieved on the pitch.

The club can be dragged down by this negativity or the supporters can rally round and get behind the team.

The Manager has spoke that the club are looking to bring in players and quickly, so those who are claiming that we are happy just to plod on with last seasons squad have had their theory disproved.

Its disappointing that we apparently had players lined up and they went elsewhere. Makes you wonder what we are offering and who we are losing out to.

I seem to remember reading an article or two on here whereby the concern of not bringing in any more players this window was also echoed. Just saying Nick.

Hypocritical to accuse 'nasty' pessimists of expressing the same concerns I recollect you reporting previously. As for your last para', nothing has been disproved or otherwise. Whether the reason for the delay has been the club 'sale' or VVD saga, to suggest that the club's business is unaffected is a nonsense and is already impacting worryingly on the preparations for the new season.

"Looking at " is not "signing".

Every other team around us in the standings have tried to improve. But as usual the Saints just sit twiddling their thumbs. When a good player is signed by another team, it's always "Oh, darn, we would have liked to sign him!" But they never had any intention to.

What's worse, is players who (unfortunately) saw us a a stepping stone, now see other teams such as Crystal Palace and West Ham as better showcases for their talent.

Well, well, surprise, surprise! The Effing season kicks off next week and Pelligrino hopes " another player will come in"... ?

What the hell has been going on upstairs since June then?

Oh I get it, we had targets almost over the line but they didn't want to come here. Yeah! Right!

We will continue to be a stepping stone club for many top players that we sign as i see it.

We pay some of the lowest agent's fees in the league. As much as i loathe agents, we are going to struggle to compete to keep the bigger players if an agent knows he would get paid far more by taking his player to an alternative club at a similar level to us.

The feather in our cap is our proven track record of taking a player who has potential then selling them to Chelsea, Liverpool, City, United etc. once they've proven themselves.

At another club, they may not get the second move so quickly to generate the bumper agent income. We've now proven time and again what we can do for players and how quickly we fold when the big clubs come in.

But some agents will be more short sighted and want the bigger, earlier payoff taking their players to West Ham etc.

Well I am a pessimist and I aint proved wrong until high quality signings are photographed shaking hands with Les - preferably tomorrow rather than 10pm on 31 August when 10 per cent of the season has already sailed past.

I have the same concerns as others above. Who did we miss out on and why? Because of the kind of rough diamonds we normally find, how are other clubs now finding these targets? I understand the reluctance of the club to overspend on mediocrity, as there have been some insanely over-the-top transfers in this window, but I remember saying back in June we needed to prioritise buying a quality centre back and playmaker and not wait until August. That is all I wanted. Just two players where we are visibly struggling and have we got either? Alas no. And the VVD saga rumbles on... If this is another summer of mistakes it's unacceptable.

Whether you have changed your tune or not Nick, this article judges the sitauation perfectly
And the Comments indicate perfectly why I Have to take a break from the Ugly every now and then because you seem to have attracted such a negative crowd
This lot would wet their pant whatever happened. They just like being unhappy
I thank god I circualte in a more positive and level-headed Sainst crowd

Making progress at the level we are at with a long-term plan is a really difficult job and a lot of people seem to think they could do better and that's just laughable
