This one seems strange to me, but it is perhaps a sign of the new owners ambition that we are even mentioned as being in a position to not just break our transfer record but smash it.

Saints are said to have been in talks with PSV Eindhoven for left sided winger Cody Gakpo and that they are talking in terms of around £35-40 million to land the Dutch International.

There was an expectation in Holland that Manchester United would make a move, but it seems that it is Saints who have spoken to PSV about their interest in Gakpo.

Sources in Holland claim that although there has been no official bid, that talks have been held between Southampton and both the players representatives and PSV Eindhoven.

The 23 year old was born in Eindhoven and has been a the club through it's youth sides.

So far he has played 95 games in the Eridivisie for PSV, scoring 30 goals and also claiming 30 assists, he also has extensive experience in the cup competitions.

Gakpo only signed an extension to his contract in January of this year to take him through to 2026, hence his services will not come cheap.

Although it seems odd that Saints will pay £40 million, it does fit in with the game plan of buying players with potential, they clearly feel that Gakpo's value will soar if he is successful at St Mary's

Can just about tolerate duplicating some positions with quality replacements to crowd the bench ready for an 'impact', but we are missing the GOAL /POINTS in most positions with our glaring and gaping holes and inhibitions -though not a talent vacuum -in other areas. I think we've probably got the players already, they are starting to be utilised correctly. (Apart from the 'bagatelle penalty' we also missed two headed sitters where our players were completely 'surprised' seeing the ball turn up in front of goal -heading's not banned yet is it?)

So Tadic got 0.5 goals per game and 0.51 assists per game. Gakpo on the other hand is only achieving 0.32 of each a game. In the premier league Tadic was only able to 0.13 goals per game 0.22 assist per game. Obviously the Eredevisie is not as competitive a league as the Premier league. Can’t see that Tadics number would improve upon our current wingers so surely this guy would actually be a reduction. Elynousi was 0.2 goals per game and 0.1 assists over the last two seasons. If we have the money and are employing money ball then clearly better ways to spend.

Smudgeman23 added 22:22 - Aug 30 You seem to all forget Mane!! Very similar player to Gakpo, also a winger, scored plenty and we took a gamble on him at the time from a league not considered as strong as the Premier league. We wouldn't pay that kind of money for a player they were dame sure of.
