Salisu Set To Leave Southampton For London
Sunday, 23rd Jul 2023 10:03

Mohammed Salisu is undoubtably a talented player, but from the very start of his career at St Mary's it was clear that his attitude would get in the way, now it seems that he will leave the club this summer, but not to a big club as he would have expected.

When Mohammed Salisu arrived at St Mary's his debut was highly anticipated, but it would six months before he actually made it, the reason behind this was never fully explained and various injuries were sometimes suggested, as was the rumour that he found the English weather too cold.

Whatever the reason, after arriving in August, he did not make his debut until February 11th in an FA Cup tie at Wolves, his Premier League debut came a few days later against the same club, this time at St Mary's.

Like many of those Saints players who were the subject of much rumour of a move to a big club back in June, Mohammed Salisu is now finding that the big clubs have remained strangely silent once the transfer window opens and if he want to stay in the Premier League, then its the bottom half he will be looking at.

Only a few weeks ago the likes of Newcastle United and even Liverpool were being claimed in the media as potential destinations for the Ghanian international.

But according to footballinsider247.com Salisu is heading to London to join Fulham.

The West London club are said to have agreed a deal with Southampton to buy him for £15 million, I would say that this is a little below his real value at somewhere between £20-26 million, but given the fact that he is now in the last year of his contract and the aforementioned attitude issues, making a £5 million profit on the deal is a good move, we need to get those like Salisu off the books and unfortunately his stock is not as high as his agent would brief the media to have you believe.

AS Monaco were also said to have had two bids turned down, whether they will launch a late bid is unclear, if not then Salisu is expected to have a medical in the early part of the coming week and move to the West London club.

Salisu could have been a Southampton legend, but in his three seasons although at times he did look the real deal, at others he was caught napping and out of position too often.

Last season he was a virtual ever present in the Premier League for Saints until mid March, after the 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves he was dropped for the next game at home to Tottenham, he came on as a 7th minute sub for Armando Bella-Kotchap and played a part as Saints came back from the dead to snatch a 3-3 draw.

This would be the last we would see of Salisu, he looked ok when he walked off the pitch, but another vague injury finished him for the season, something we could ill afford given the Bella-Kotchap injury .

I don't wish Salisu any ill will, I am just sad that he never really achieved the high standards he was capable of, whether he ever will, is another question.

Another of the young signings that hasn't quite reached their potential but there is still plenty of time to improve.
Many rumours of him not being willing to play, which I really hope are untrue but if so then we are better off without him. Good luck to him regardless.

Good deal if we get £15 million. Flattered to deceive and never really progressed into a reliable Premier League defender. Maybe he will realise his potential with Fulham but I'd be suprised.

Problem was trying to play Salisu, B-K and Bazunu together. Need experience in defence. I hope we have a good sell on clause. Got potential to be a very good CB.

He did have a few good games, but in "his defence" played with every other CB in the club (until his injury in February), and not sure he ever struck up a partnership with any of them.
It all comes down to his attitude and being able to fit in with others the squad.
Although he cost good money, it's nothing to try and keep a player who's heart isn't in it, and with one year left on his contract it sounds like a win-win for everyone involved.

Really, in the round he was a bit like a slightly better Lemina. He has great skill, some of his interceptions and tackles were just sublime but he seems to lack the drive and concentration needed to be a top CB. As always whether this is down to the situation at SFC or him personally we may never know.

Won't miss his loopy long throws tho

<Sigh>, he's a headcase, and we need to move him on, full price or cut-rate.

Don't like comparisons, but a bit more Lemina than Reed.
Now that was a strange virtual double signing when that happened wasn't it?
Still think he could do a job for us whilst learning, but will watch this one with interest.
