Yorkshire Media Claim That Sheffield Wednesday Battling To Keep Danny Rohl
Tuesday, 17th Dec 2024 20:29

Usually the local media have their finger on the pulse of their clubs and if that is the case, then Yorkshire media are convinced that Southampton are pursuing Danny Rohl and that the Owls are struggling to keep their man.

This evening's story on yorkshirepost.com claim that the compensation clause in Danny Rohl's contract is the only weapon that Sheffield Wednesday have as they battle to keep Danny Rohl at the club.

They say that when Rohl signed a new deal back in the summer keeping him tied to the club till July 2027, that an unconfirmed report said that part of the agreement that Rohl made when signing the deal was a reduced release clause and that could be good news for Southampton.

But Rohl's decision on where his future lies is not just about money, the article also claims that "Rohl has been seeking without getting assurances from owner/chairman Dejphon Chansiri about the financial backing he wants to try to kick the Owls into play-off contention in the January transfer window."

So the assertion is that perhaps the compensation payment will not be as high as was previously thought and that being the case, Southampton will not be baulking at the cost of getting Rohl as much as was expected.

Rohl may not be attracted to Southampton because of the chance of a swift return to the Championship, but he may well see that he has a better chance of getting back there than with Sheffield where he is working to a tight budget.

Not exactly a difficult line to come up with after the word came about our initial interest, but they make damn good tea bags.. Yorkshire Gold rocks

We're definitely going back to the Championship, so he could help us there. But—unless our goal is to be a Championship-caliber side—I do wish could stop entertaining Championship-level options and aspire to more elite signings.

He certainly meets the criteria our board look for ie he’s about 10th in the championship

Its going to be a tough job, because there's still a long way to go this season, and watching us lose week in week out will mean there wont be an awful lot of goodwill if we struggle next season. I think will be very hard attracting anyone to the job.
We almost need a half season fall guy, with a short contract and hit the ground running next year similar to last time. That said I hope we do still have a go at staying up however unlikely

Of all the names mentioned Rohl is the one I would choose
Yong, ambitious and with a reasonable amount of experience
One not mentioned is FC Bodo Glint manager Knutsen Perhaps he is the mystery foreigner
With all clubs facing a busy schedule of games it will be difficult to get anyone still on a contract

I remain unconvinced that Sports Republic are seriously interested in Rohl. Not because he isn’t a decent manager, he certainly is and has had success at every club he has been at not least Saints with Ralph and now Sheffield Wednesday on his own. However, Rohl’s footballing principles are for the high press/work hard off the ball approach which we saw for most of the time under Ralph. SR have already committed to the possession style that Russel Martin preached albeit with some pragmatism that RM couldn’t apply. If SR appoint Rohl, not only are they throwing away that philosophy which they haven’t shown any indication that they are willing to but also the majority of the current squad have spent the last 18 months playing and were brought in specifically to play. Rohl will want players that can play his way and while some of the squad will be able to adapt, we could have a situation where many need to be moved on because they don’t fit. We haven’t yet cleared out some of the players from the Ralph, Idiot, Selles period so could limit our ability to get in the players Rohl would need.

Don’t get me wrong of all the names mentioned I would put Rohl near the top, probably with Potter, but as it stands I don’t see it happening.
