Maybe it's due to the increased demand :-)

There should be a couple of advance offers where you'll save about £70. Problem is the outward one gets you there at Half Two and the return isn't until 7pm.

you need a family railcard for a start mate, then try splitting the journey up instead of direct there, stranglers might be able to give you some advice how to get it from sheff area

Just booked mine. Choosing early and late trains saves a few pennies.

From sheff : Try sheff to chesterfield , then chesterfield to Newport,

Buy singles, but deffo get a family railcard, you get a1/3 off,

he said should be cheap going but dear coming back

You coming from Sheffield? Cross Country trains fare for £153.80 direct with Family Railcard. As Dezzy says, you can play the system as well.

The problems of train pricing on a bank holiday weekend....

Question to any frequent rail travellers (which I'm not):

If booking a return ticket on the 17.05 out of Newport is £8 cheaper than the later train at 18.05, what happens if you "miss" the earlier one but catch the later one?

Is the ticket stamped with a particular journey time, or just the date?

If it's 'Advance' ticket and specifies the train you should be on, then the train manager (guard) should make you buy a new full price ticket for your journey (unless he is a good mood!). Could be expensive as single tickets on the day usually are.

Cheers

I knew there'd be a catch!

So it wouldn't just be a matter of saying "I missed the earlier train" and coughing up the difference (in a Welsh accent)?

Could try it especially if we have won the league but you could get a Chesterfield guard if on Cross Country!!

Not really.

I could go by car, save myself at least £10 in travel expenses, stop where I want for a piss and the train companies will have lost a minimum of £60 because of their arsey pricing

Booked mine earlier, when typing in Rochdale to Newport got quoted £96.

Went through the rigmarole of trying different singles checking out going via Bristol or Birmingham and got the price down to about £70.

Then as a last resort simply typed in Picadilly to Newport and got a price of £53 for a direct train. Much better and a decent price. Also good times; set out at 8.30am and return at 8.30pm.

I'll use half a tank of diesel there and back...40 beer tokens for two of us.
And they want you to use public transport.

Michael Portillo never has any problems.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

True, but I've no intention of bumping into Portillo whilst going for a piss!

You should be grateful I'm going, instead of having to worry about me being locked up with my laptop as I'd intended.

I think Hilly models his trousers on Portillo's!
