We all know this has been done to death over the years but having just seen someone discussing it in the Joe Allen thread it got me thinking, how long do we have to be competing at this level (having won a major cup) before we start climbing the ladder in terms of club size? and what else to we need to do other than expand.

Getting someone decent to run the commercial department would be a good start.

Well Leicester have just won the Premier League and they are still considered a small club and all their players are buggering off to 'big' clubs so we've got no fu cking chance.

We're always going to be considered a small club in Premiership terms while we're playing in a stadium of barely 21k capacity. We need to get it up to a minimum 30k.

A major factor with regards to being a big club is fan base. Our ground is too small and I know you said ‘other than expand’ but it really is where we need to be starting.
We won’t build a proper fan base by selling out our 21k stadium every week with no room for new fans.

Expansion ,stay in this league, and win PLENTY of major cups then you become big ,it could take a generation

I think you've nailed that one.

At the moment I'd say that we are in the large group of mid table-ish clubs. Unless we get some sugar daddy owner, we will never be one of the "big clubs." You could perhaps say that there is a tier in between us and them where, for instance, Everton sit. Realistically I think that's our ceiling and that will take a number of good years with solid behind the scenes work to achieve.

I'd say we are now on borrowed time a club of our size in this league .

Who's leaving Leicester besides Kante?

Plus they've already spent 16 million on Musa in a transfer window that's had very little activity so far, which is the reason Ulloa might be available for Swansea. LC seems to be managing this window OK so far, for such a small club with players ripe for the picking.

Have to get the average gates up, which is impossible without expansion.

Hopefully our American friends will circumvent this "must purchase before expansion" bollocks and move things along quicker than Huw and co did.

2 of them close on 40000 capacity, the other about 52000. When they get back up they will be big clubs again immediately. 21000 every other week is brilliant, we could only dream about it not long back. But we need to get to 30000 at least, probably nearer 35000 to consider ourselves a medium sized club.

I'd argue that it's the world-wide commercial appeal and the revenues that generates, which separates the "big" clubs from the medium ones.

Newcastle had the 4th largest attendances last season, and Sunderland the 6th, but their commercial turnover is far less than Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham.

Stadium attendance isn't a big deal any more. The difference between 20k and 40k is minimal as a percentage of turnover in the Premier League.

Have you thought about that?

20,000 *£40 a ticket) * 19 = £15.2m (+ additional fancy dining and boxes and food/drink sales etc. Probably looking at a £20m uplift in income stream over the course of the season.)

Id say it was a big deal, especially for clubs outside the big 6 or so

Nah. £5-7m at best as it would be mostly ST sales including concessions. Still a lot mind. But we'd need a completely new stadium at what? £50m, £100m, £150m? So could take 10-25 yrs to get a return.

The question shouldn't be 'are we a big club', but rather 'what makes a club big'? Attendance is only part of the picture. World-wide recognition & global fan base, success on the pitch, history all come into it.

Fair points above. Dont think we would ever need a stadium above 35,000 either tbh. Even if we were getting CL football, not sure we would be able to fill it every week, and the new stadium is probs never gonna happen in our lifetimes anyway.

Wonder what other commercial streas are out there. The big clubs have a lot of those markets sewn up.

Leeds don't break 20K half the time these days. It's truly embarrassing given the size of their catchment and the self proclaimed extreme loyalty of the supporters.

Worse support than Cardiff. pound for pound.

It was a worry that even in our dip this season some people started drifting away. I suspect you're right about 35k being the absolute top and even that a struggle. Success on the pitch is the most direct way to raise income I reckon. Or a 'celebrity' signing a bit like Ki to boost an overseas market. Not sure how much that extra coverage brings in though. The downside is it brings all sorts of nutters to this board!

If attendances aren't significant then why are Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham, Liverpool, Man City either expanding or have just done so ? As already said, it's not just about bums on seats, it's about everything that goes with it, food, drinks, merchandise, etc.

Expand the ground, get them shirts around the valleys and only then may we become a fairly big sized team. At some point we will get relegated so best getting them fans in place before that happens.
