Once Everton has touched you...... on 14:17 - Aug 11 by londonlisa2001

Yeah - apart from he's really not is he.

Which is why Mourinho wanted Stones at £30m plus last season and Pep has bought him at £47m now. To say Williams is better than him is just nonsense, which is why no Champions League club have ever gone near him, let alone at that sort of money. The age counts for some of it, but even at his height and at 24 or 25 Williams wouldn't have interested the top managers.

Stones is a poor defender with a reputation based on ball-playing (and overplaying), his youth meaning he "can only get better" (which is nonsense) and his nationality at a time when England have no standout centrebacks.

He's going to go right on the Man City scrapheap like every other defender they've bought for big money in the last 3-4 years.

Personally I think it'll just keep getting worse and worse. People have been saying for years it'll implode on itself but I just can't see it.

It'll model itself on the NFL for instance that is gaining popularity all over the world on a yearly basis. We'll be playing games abroad, kicking off at times to suit audiences across the other side of the world, etc and the foreign TV deals will keep rolling in. I bet the PL have barely scratched the surface in USA, Asia, etc.

It'll be no good for the people who go to games but we make up a tiny percentage of fans in reality. People probably pay more to Sky Sports for a 12 month subscription than the average football fan (taking into account the FL) does for a Season Ticket.. Who is going to be the priority?

Sadly you are probably right - football isn't the game that many of us grew up watching and you are right it will get worse.

I know many football fans who now watch lower league football instead of the sides they used to watch because they feel more of an affinity for a club rather than a brand

The moment that 39th game comes in (and you are right it will) is the moment that the diehard fan has ceased to have any real significance at all

I think he's overrated as well, but there's a hell of a gulf between being overrated and 'Ashley Williams is way better than John Stones'.

You wouldn't find a single manager that agrees with you. After all, as you have yourself said on many occasions, Williams was not good enough for a Champions League team, and there wouldn't be one in this country that wouldn't have taken Stones. Not for £47m, but that is irrelevant in comparing which player is 'better' which is what you've said.

Stones is a modern Rio Ferdinand. He'll be quality, but has a long way to develop. Hes young though.

But 10 years ago he'd have cost £15m. Blame the tv money.

The European Super League is getting closer.. and the Worldwide Club Cup..

MLS
China
Saudi Leagues
South America
Africa
A League

All catching up with Europe in the £ stakes..

MLS attendances averaging 4.8 million fans per year..

China attendances averaging 5 million fans per year..

A League attendances averaging 1.6 million fans per year

it's all growing with popularity.. and all leagues progressing.

it's the most popular sport in the world.. A European Super League is not far off..

Air travel and hotel prices decreasing.. it'll be a regular 'thing' fans will travel on to matches.. I can imagine all the leagues branching out into European divisions.. battling out to make the European Super League.

Players are nothing more than business organisations these days..

At Stones age Rio was dragging Leeds through the CL.

Stones spent much of last season behind Jagielka and Funes Mori on merit.

What are you talking about?

He started 29 of the 38 games for Everton in the Pl last year. How is that spending 'much of last season behind Jagielka and Funes Mori'?

None of those leagues are anywhere near the PL. they may be growing, but the PL is growing faster.

The fans there turn up to games in their Man Utd and Chelsea tops then go home and watch their real team on their cable tv subscription that costs them more than match day tickets.

Bar the established leagues in Europe and South America, the PL is more popular than the respective domestic league more or less everywhere. It may be reaching saturation point here, but worldwide it is exploding at a far greater pace than any of the others.

Hotels and planes will not become part of the average match day experience for many fans.

You genuinely believe a European Super League is not in the pipeline?

Uefa and Fifa have already structured it.. and affordable travel costs and hotels for away fans have been in the paperwork.

Yes I do. The PL is by far and away the biggest cash cow. UEFA and FIFA are not going to destroy it, the CL and several other leagues just so Man United can play Real Madrid more often. As much as the clubs themselves may want it, the governing bodies wont.

Look at the prospective divisions you have posted. Who is going to travel to the other side of Europe to watch the vast majority of that? Who will pay to watch it on TV?

It was the rest of your post I really disagreed with though. The notion of the MLS and Chinese Super League being a credible threat to the PL is laughable. Let alone the A league.

Everton Weekes was a cricketer for the West Indies wasn't he?

There's a roundabout named after him in Barbados.

The bit I don't understand about the Ash Williams social media stuff, is that they've sold a player for £50m, replaced him with a 32 year old for £12m and are announcing it as though it's the transfer of Bale or Ronaldo.

If we sold a player for £50m and replaced them with a 32 year old for £12m there'd be ructions on here about asset stripping, lack of ambition, 'where's the money gone' stuff etc. I don't understand how they can be happy. Of course Stones isn't worth what they've received, but that doesn't help the fans - it's not like they have cheaper tickets now. Strange.

When I was in Barbados there was only one roundabout on the whole island. It was such a novelty that they used to go round and round it.

Agree with you swanseajill.

In fact, the whole last day or so has been very very strange. The club did a big 'thank you' to him and the acknowledgment the other way has been more suited to a player that's been with us for a season or so, not for 8 years.

Ayew made more of an effort to say goodbye and he was with us for a couple of minutes in comparison.

Very, very odd. Couple of comments made by him (Everton have a good manager, club going in right direction) and us (asked to leave, Guidolin saying he didn't want to get involved, and he thinks a player should be allowed to go) are not what you'd expect after such a long time.

No love lost perhaps, on either side. Fits in with a few comments that have been made that he disagreed with the non appointment of Brendan.

As you say - not our player. I look forward to our 6 foot 5 centre forward running up against him from corners when we play them...

Quite possibly Ash wrongly thought he was bigger than the club.

He was a player (and yes, captain), and should have no input into any player/manager signings.
