Just because Grimes outperforms Fulton on stats doesn't make Fulton's contribution invalid. Fulton operates in different areas for a start - he was putting in tackles second half in front of the away supporters. You wouldn't find Grimes there. I've been critical of Fulton, especially when he hides from the ball, but in the absence of anyone else who can perform his role, I think he's well worth having in the side against teams who would try to bully us. Leeds, for all their silky football, are one of the dirtiest teams in the division. Can you imagine Carroll playing yesterday? He shites out of 50/50s and we all notice it and get on his back for it. Fulton is prepared to go for 40/60s.

You’re right about Leeds being dirty, though it was more gamesmanship than anything dangerous. They played the ref brilliantly in the first half, repeatedly stopping our attacks before they started with niggly fouls in innocuous areas of the pitch that didn’t quite merit a booking, but stopped us getting moves going. Bielsa deserves his plaudits, but he’s a cynical old fck whose teams live on the edge of cheating.

The flipside is that when he's in the side over Byers we have a harder time keeping possession, which makes winning those scraps and 40/60s more important. Bidwell over Fulton another example.

Under Potter in the second half of last season we were one of the best in the division for not conceding goals from open play. Few complaints about us lacking bite and bottle against the bullies in that period (QPR game perhaps excepted).

Didn't understand your first sentence at all.

I still find Byers a bit of a luxury but he's better than Fulton when we're on top. Byers was pretty anonymous at QPR a couple of weeks ago though. I'd still play Fulton in preference against teams that are likely to bully us - and there are plenty of them in this division.

Clearly your analysis of games is based solely on stats. Are you Billy Beane in disguise?

What part of the first sentence is tripping you up? Fulton rarely offers for the ball. His touch isn't great and he plays with clogs on, so it can bounce off him in tight areas. He's alright at sticking his boot in and giving away free kicks but that's a quality we didn't need as much last season, when we were looking after the ball better.

"Luxury" Byers had a better pass success rate than Grimes, he did an excellent job not just retaining the ball but keeping it moving quickly (see Celina's goal against City). Amazing that people's memories are so short.

What tripped me up? Why's it more important to win 40/60s when Byers isn't playing? Because apparently we struggle to keep possession anyway. Doesn't follow.

Look, I'm not a huge fan of Fulton - I've been critical of him as much as anyone. He is what he is. I don't know whether you've noticed, or whether the stats tell you, but the teams who do well in this division are not averse to "sticking the boot in" and "giving away free kicks". Leeds do it. Norwich did it. Sheff Utd did it. We obviously need to play good football, but we always need to compete when we don't have the ball - despite how well we look after it when we have it.

Who's comparing Byers to Grimes?

People's memories are not short, thank you very much.

Players like Fulton are a vital component to the team. All the young midfielders offer something different but have some similarities. Dhanda, Grimes and Fulton can all win the ball with Fulton being the weakest of the three in possession but he’s also the one more likely to get the ball when odds are against it. Byers won’t really win the ball and is more likely to give a foul away by shirt pulling but he’s more like Dhanda or Grimes in that he’s willing to open up a defence or have a dip. They all have something offer.

On the original point, I’m not sure Fulton is particularly unsung. He does the dog job in midfield yes, but I don’t think many are unable to appreciate what he does and why it’s important.

Players that primarily disrupt and aren’t there to do anything flashy on the ball are only going to get the adulation a creative or goal scoring midfield does if they are absolutely exceptional at it.

We had less than 40% of the ball on Saturday. There's a lot more 40/60s in that sort of game than the ones where we had 60-70% possession last season.

That was because we were playing Leeds away though. We had over 70% against Birmingham with Fulton in the team.

If memory serves Fulton is more used to playing in an attacking role for the u23's so he's doing a job he's not particularly steeped in for the first team.

He's done well. They all have. I still wish we had a player capable of bossing midfield battles and turning the tide of games our way (we'd be nailed on for the autos if we did) but they're rare at this level.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Players like Leon are rare at any level. To be able to mix it with the big boys without resorting to dirty tactics and still coming out on top whilst always being available and willing to receive the ball is a very special thing.

Leon. Bodde. Even Fer when he was on his game. Just someone capable of winning the ball and switching the momentum with a pass or a run.

One of the young 'uns will probably get there in time, but It'd be making our lives a lot easier if we already had one.

Phillips for Leeds.

Cracking player, can see why they were desperate to keep him.

Grimes plays deeper than the rest so he’s the one most likely to fill the Bodde type deep ball winning playmaker roll for me. Byers is more Scholes like. Fulton could be a flat out out ball winning central midfielder, needs one of the other beside him to do the fancy stuff and retain possession. We’re looking good for a few midfield combinations, with a bit of patience.

Not seeing that in Grimes' game yet, although if he continues his improvement perhaps he's the most likely candidate.

I know I'm nitpicking a bit, but I can't help looking for ways to make us better.

They keep going on about how about how the dominated us - it took them five or six fouls in the first ten minutes to get on top. It obviously part of the game plan. Filthy dirty Leeds.

Im one of these Jasper, i like 2 in midfield with bite. I know the game has changed but Fulton has been good so far so leave well alone for now i say. We are starting to get choices in positions which is all good news, Im a fan of Dhanda as you know but it was a brave call to start him yesterday. I havent seen any extended highlights to comment further, only to say well done SC.

I couldn’t see who made the challenge but there was one almost local derby style tackle, with the two players sliding in and really going for it. We’ve toughened up a lot.
