At least we can beat a Milan team on 19:28 - Apr 16 by PatfromPoole | We also beat Liverpool about 3 months before they won the Champions League Final in 2005. And yet we still got relegated. That pisses all over the Pomps drawing with AC Milan’s over the hill prima donnas. Except for Inzaghi, who will always be a God in my eyes. |
We nearly beat man united at old Trafford the season after they won the treble. That got to be better than Pompey nearly beating a team at home who finished 5th in Serie A. Maybe it isn’t a win for Pompey after all

At least we can beat a Milan team on 18:42 - Apr 16 by Wints76 | Haven't Saints beaten existing European Champions several times throughout our history? I think most recently against Chelsea in 2013. Certainly beat Villa in 82 as well (possibly their first defeat after becoming champions?). Probably Forest after their two victories. Away at Liverpool in 81. |
We also beat Liverpool 2-0 in 84 the season they won the European cup, league and league cup. They were crowned English and European champions only two months after our victory over them. Not quite almost beating the team that would finish the season 3rd in serie A but close. [Post edited 16 Apr 2020 22:04]

At least we can beat a Milan team on 22:38 - Apr 16 with 564 views | PatfromPoole | We also battered United 3-1 about a month before they won the League and Cup double in 95/96. This would have been nowhere near as good an achievement as nearly beating a team which included the truly abysmal Arsenal reject Philippe Senderos in defence.

Senderos only played as Maldini was injured AC Milan were also reigning FIFA Club World champions when they managed to equalise in injury time against us. The greatest ever English team in terms of trophies was the Man Utd team of 2006-10 in terms of trophies. We managed to beat them twice in that period including at their place on the way to winning the FA cup. They would also become FIFA Club World champions later in the year.

At least we can beat a Milan team on 13:50 - Apr 16 by this_charming_man | Another very good point as only further emphasised the superiority of the Pompey draw. I know only 3 of the ac Milan team which won the champions league the previous season started the game at fratton park but the point shouldn’t be ignored. Only emphasises the gulf in quality between the two teams that no one would have heard of Handanovic, D’Ambrosio, Miranda, Perisic, Icardi or Banega to name just a few when we played inter. Factoring all that in not only was nearly beating Milan a better result than us actually beating Inter It’s probably the best ever result in Europe for any club south of the M4. Exactly, I've never heard of Handanovic, D’Ambrosio, Miranda, Icardi or Banega, but I had heard of Perisic 2 years later. The AC Milan team though, any football fan above 20 has heard of about 12 / 13 of those players

At least we can beat a Milan team on 15:06 - Apr 17 by 130yrs_and_one_Cup | So, you've heard of him, unlike most of the inter players 6 of them played in the European Super Cup 15 months earlier Reigning Club World champions, and 5 of them played that night, Zambrotta being injured What bit about reigning Club World Champions don't you get? |
Which bit of "only 3 started in the Champions league final" dont you get? As soon as they brought two more on they scored 2 goals in 15 minutes. It's a bit like a premier leauge team putting out a second string at a lower league club but with a few first teamers on the bench in case they need them really. Well done on your famous draw though. However, I was surprised you'd never heard of some of the players for Inter. Miranda, 58 caps for Brazil, first choice centre back for Brazil when we played them, Copa America winner, La LIga winner. Icardi - top scorer in Italy twice and top 5 scorer every year between 2015-19, now at PSG, long term Man United target Banega - 65 caps for Argentina, part of the Sevilla team which beat LIverpool in the Europa league final. These are hardly nobodies, all started and all in their prime when we played Inter. Oh and we actually won the game. I guess you just dont know your football [Post edited 17 Apr 2020 15:16]

See comment above 5 started in the Champions League Final (more porkies from TCM) 1 came off the bench 6 in total I've seriously never heard of Miranda, was he as good as Zambrotta? Any Champions League winners or World cup winners in that team? [Post edited 17 Apr 2020 15:23]

At least we can beat a Milan team on 16:15 - Apr 17 with 305 views | PatfromPoole | Southampton have far more heritage in European football than Portsmouth. This is undeniable fact. Portsmouth’s main feat against Italian opposition is in the Anglo-Italian Cup, beating Cesena 2-0 in November 1992 at Fratton Park in front of a hugely impressive crowd of 4,752. There was perhaps a basketball match on in town that night. Before then losing 3-0 away to Bari in front of a crowd of 800. Presumably all of them were Portsmouth fans, and there were another 6,000 stuck at the airport unable to travel. Whereas Saints beat Inter.

Remember almost beating AC Milan, a match which by 130s own admission, saw them rest a number of their best players ranks as their 8th or 9th greatest moment in their history.

In one year : 2008, we won the FA cup, we beat the best English team ever away, and almost beat the then current Club World Champions and European Super Cup winners. That was probably our 5th best ever season tbh
