It seems that in the last quarter of this premier league season (9 games) Saints have:
Lost only 1 game, to Arsenal in hot conditions
Conceded 5 goals and had 4 clean sheets
But according to this site and several posters, Saints lack central defenders capable of playing well in this league and our top priority should be to buy better ones.
Can someone explain what I'm missing ? |  |

We have had an incredible run in after the restart but think back to our form earlier in the season. Even in our good run the defence often looked weak. The fact that the club already seem to have signed a new centre had tells you all you need to know. |  | | |

Our defence has been no better or worse than most in the league. Unfortunately some people have become obsessed with it, dissecting every single goal we concede and never ever mentioning the goals they save or the positive aspects they bring to the team. I wish the new lad from Valladolid the best of luck, but if things don't go well for him in the first few matches I hope he doesn't get slagged off in the same monotonous manner that Bednarek and Stephens have been all season. |  | | |

The 60 goals we conceded and the manner in which many of them were conceded was the problem.
The run in during the lock down and empty stadiums masked the problems in defence and we rode our luck a few times - including today.
The need for a quality centre back has not gone away. We always look vulnerable against teams with pace or play long balls into the box. |  | | |

It’s the unforced stupid errors that people have a problem with. We could and perhaps should have been 3 down today in the first half alone. A clean sheet can’t always be classed as good defending when you get away with it because the attacking team isn’t clinical enough.
A sizeable percentage of the goals we concede seem to be gifts from our own players. Admittedly it’s not always the centre halves at fault, but if we could cut them out, we’re a pretty decent side. |  |
