And brought in a hopefully decent left-back from France, plus Walcott and two kids from Chelsea. We’d better have a few rabbits up our sleeve or else we are in the brown stuff. |
Bertrand lost interest a while ago he had to go and IMO KWP is better than Bertrand.

| A Point To Consider on 11:59 - Aug 5 by SaintNick | Ok Lets compare to 2014/15 summer Saints have sold Lambert, Lallana, Lovren, Chambers & Shaw for around £95 million, the spine of the side and with the new season 10 days away have only signed an unknown player called Dusan Tadic for £10 million and another unheard of striker called Graziano Pelle for £8 million. Neither are fit to lick the boots of Adam Lallana or Sir Rickie Lambert and we are now going to be relegated for sure. The fans are in uproar claiming that the owner is going to pocket the money, the club has no ambition, we have sold our best players and the people on this message board are telling me I'm in the clubs pocket as im just so grateful that Cortese has gone. Sound a good comparison ? So what happened next did we A. sink without trace as many had so vocally predicted and end the season being relegated or B. Bide our time, make some very astute signings and finish a place higher in the Premier League qualifying for Europe in the process. For the summer of 2015 pretty much repeat the above. All i have said here is that give the club time to deal with the situation, back in 2014 we didn't sign replacements before we had sold players, we knew we had our targets and we got them. Too many people moan about what they think is going to happen and dont wait until they see what actually happens. Back in 2015 & 16 I could keep the moral high ground, some like SF73 have never forgiven me for it and just live to wait for the day when they can say they have been proved right. I will criticise the club when I need to, but I do so when it needs doing, if we end the transfer window without replacing Ings I will be the first to stand up and say so. That is one thing I learned back in 2014 is to keep calm and wait to see what happens and not whinge at the first setback, it is always what you do next, never what you have just done. The second thing I learned is that when you stick your head above the parapet and challenge Cortese on what everyone else is saying on message boards, the internet warriors are then strangely silent |
To compare the 2015 side to this crap (and it is a crap squad lets be honest its a fu*king disgrace akin to the tory run down of the nation in the 80's), we haven't a good goalkeeper, arguably centrebacks are wobbly at best and Stephens is shite, total shite, the midfield is our strongest point but thats no good with no quality other than Adams up front and he is not natural goal scorer, his quality lies in quick passing and dragging the oppositions out of position. The obvious answer is if we could be sold we would but who would buy us? Its a club haemorrhaging and no #wemarchon or lads scoring worldies in training will change that.

I wasnt comparing the 2015 side, I was comparing what was left after the sale of the 5 players , after they had left there wasnt a much better core squad left at the start of August 2014 Goalkeeper Boruc Right back - Clyne Central defender Fonte & Yoshida Left back - Vacant Wide men Vacant Central midfield - Davis -JWP - Wanyama- Schneiderlin Cork Forwards Mayuka- Gallagher - That was about it, so I would say that at this stage 7 years ago our squad was no where near as good as it is now, we are coming from a stronger squad basis now than we were in July 2014

Are you saying that core isn't better than what we have now? Its 100% better.

Not a chance, no way, there is nothing in recent seasons to suggest we know what we're doing transfer wise and for us to buy 4/5 absolute quality players for a bargain is odds of winning the lottery, I am all for optimism but lets be honest and realistic, base it upon reason.

They're not even the best club in the Midlands! Second big difference - Gao wasn't around then. Ever since he started sniffing around Saints have been in decline. Not matter what excuses are made for him this fact is clear. Taxi for Mr Gao! [Post edited 5 Aug 2021 13:48]

Apart from the centre of midfield we are stronger in all areas than what we were left with in the summer of 2014, I have given my view you tell me whether Mayuka is better than Che Adams, of if Yoshida is better than Bednarek, or Sam Gallagher is a better prospect than Nathan Tella, I could go on. Back in July 2014 we could barely put out a team aside from the centre of midfield

Yoshida was a better player than Bednarek, also far more adaptable, he certainly wasn't the best but neither are our 3 centrebacks, we've been wanting replacements for ages but thats another issue. That central midfield is one hell of a lot better than what we have, your post is one of hope, blind hope but I admire that, lets see the starting line in 9 days and see if it is stronger than our loss to Liverpool 2-1 Forster Clyne Fonte Yoshida Bertrand Davis Schneiderlin Wanyama Ward-Prowse Pellè Tadic Confident? I'm not, no where near it and you'd be mad to believe we'd have a team anywhere near that good.

| A Point To Consider on 16:37 - Aug 5 with 387 views | dirk_doone | In the summer of 2014, we had Paul 'Black Box' Mitchell as Head of Recruitment and in that transfer window be brought in Fraser Forster, Ryan Bertrand, Toby Alderweireld, Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane. We haven't got him now. We already had Jose Fonte, Nathaniel Clyne, Steven Davis and Victor Wanyama. In fact, we had a whole team of players that other Premier League clubs would have happily had in their teams. So I would say our squad was stronger then than now. But, as long as we win games, I'm happy, and so far our pre-season results have beeen good. I'm hoping that a strike partnership of Nathan Tella and Adam Armstrong will make up for the loss of Ings. Our defence looks weak though, even more so if Ralph persists with McCarthy in goal as he is easily the worst goalkeeper in the league. | |

The problem comes when we get injuries Dirk. The first 11 are just about ok, although without Ings we will struggle to score. But take out Ward-Prowse, Romeu (its inevitable he will get suspended!) , Diallo, Perraud, Walker-Peters, Djenepo, Armstrong and Ves. This happened at Man U last year except Bertrand was unavailable instead of Perraud. So who would play at left back, right back, defensive midfield etc? [Post edited 5 Aug 2021 16:48]
