The cult of Hamilton 20:47 - May 29 with 2180 viewssaint68

Yet again when paired with a fellow English driver in a mediocre car he's being left adrift..Button outpointed him when teammates and young George Russel is making him look less than legendary...

Verdict...over rated.

I think this season was one too many for him after the debacle of how last season ended. He clearly is not as keen to continue but I guess another £40 mill in the bank this year told him that he may as well carry on - well he needs the money
Over rated? Not too sure totally right as he only has to beat what's in front of him and if he doesn't have the better car most drivers would struggle, though he always had the reputation of starring in the wet, but the future for British fans is now clearly with Russell and Norris

You could make the same case for Michael Schumacher, Vettel, Alonso or any other great F1 driver. Schumacher didn't win a single GP in his final three years in a Mercedes.

Hamilton should have won his final GP last season and then he'd have retired at the top. The fact that he was robbed of it by a bad officiating decision has forced him to stay on a year too long. In F1, as in all sports, there is an age when you start to decline. At 37, Hamilton is already older than most other top F1 drivers were when they retired.

The fact that Cristiano Ronaldo's career is now in decline because of his age and playing in a poor Man United team doesn't mean he wasn't a great player.

Ultimately, it's about winning and nobody goes on winning forever:

It is a bit like Walcot. He was a real thoroughbred, and put in a high quality bream, excelled. Put him in a team of dunces, and he was not able to perform. Ditto Hamilton in a duff car. You could argue that’s he should be able to get the very best out of the poorest of kit, but in fact, his whole persona is based on getting the very best out of top quality kit. As his performances of the years have demonstrated, with some truly exceptional drives.

It's always difficult to separate the performance of the driver from the performance of the car in F1, but by and large 'market forces' make sure the best drivers are in the best cars.

With 7 world championships (and as has been said above should have been 8, were it not for last year's robbery), most F1 wins and and most F1 poles, the case for Hamilton being 'over rated' is a bold.
