The fatwa against this guy was issued something like 33 years ago. Hope he makes it.

Poll: Biggest signing so far in January? (just curious what Planet Swans thinks)

There’s little evidence for it though. There are numerous accounts of him even in later life saying he remains a catholic and always will be. The strength of his belief obviously only he would know. But he was pragmatic and opportunist when it came to religion, he nicked the swastika off the Hindus, he wished Germany could have been Muslim rather than Christian as he saw it as more warlike. He admired Martin Luther and his teachings and the pragmatism of reforming the church to suit his goals.

Ultimately nobody will ever know for sure but there’s little to no evidence to suggest he was ever a fully fledged atheist. People have suggested that he became more nihilistic after becoming enamoured with the works of Nietzsche but that’s a tenuous link at best.

As for nazi Germany being an “atheist ideology” nearly every single German solder had a belt engraved with the saying “Gott mit uns” which translates as God is with us. Many high ranking members were religious.

Gott mit uns, doesn't mean they follow any particular religion or beliefs. There's a difference between spirituality and religion.

The etymology of the word atheist means literally “without God”. Why would a regime that is without God insist all their soldiers wear a sign saying that God is with them?

Bear in mind the regime we are speaking of wanted to control essentially every aspect of their citizens lives.

Gotta admit, as much as I thought I knew this BBS, "Hitler's belief in Christianity" was not on my Bingo card about where this thread would go.

Update today sounds like Salman is going to make it, BTW.

An opportune moment to revisit this clip, and a reminder of what a tragic loss the early death of Christopher Hitchens really is. Commentators of that quality are rare in any decade but in this they are an extinct breed.

Stating the obvious, the NAZIS were an extreme organisation and totalitarian. They would have believed that they were in the right and theirs was the only way. I can only assume that bringing the god bit into it would have given them broader appeal. They used the term socialist to appeal or to placate the communists at the time. People like to use labels for some reason

Introduction
The vast majority of Germans belonged to a Christian church during the Nazi era. In 1933 there were 40 million Protestants, 20 million Catholics, and small numbers of people adhering to other Christian traditions. The German Evangelical Church (the largest Protestant church) and the Roman Catholic church were pillars of German society and played an important role in shaping people’s attitudes and actions vis-à-vis National Socialism, including anti-communism, nationalism, traditional loyalty to governing authorities (particularly among Protestants), and the convergence of Nazi antisemitism with widespread and deep-seated anti-Jewish prejudice.

Within the German Evangelical Church the pro-Nazi “German Christian” (Deutsche Christen) movement emerged in the early 1930s. It attempted to fuse Christianity and National Socialism and promoted a “racially-pure” church by attacking Jewish influences on Christianity. This attempt to nazify the primary Protestant church provoked a backlash, leading to the formation of the Confessing Church (Bekennende Kirche) in 1934. Both the Confessing and the “German Christian” movements remained part of the German Evangelical Church. The Confessing Church movement condemned Nazified theology and the attempt to nationalize the church, but it limited its protest to maintaining the theological integrity and autonomy of the Protestant churches–not protesting the legitimacy of the Nazi state itself. Although there were individual resisters, many mainstream Protestant and Catholic church leaders made numerous compromises with Nazi authorities and supported many of the Nazi measures throughout the period.

This turned up in my YouTube recommendations after the Rushdie attack.

The man was an absolute intellectual titan. Shirley Williams shown up as an apologist, everything we’ve ever needed to know about Johnson right there, and the other Hitchens - the very definition of the poor relation.

Hitchens terrified people.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

You have to feel a bit for a Peter Hitchens. He’s a clever bloke, I recently re-read his ‘Phoney Victory’ and it’s excellent but his brother was a genuine high-brow rockstar.

It’s nigh-on impossible to shine under a shadow cast as long as his brother’s.

I was very tempted when I saw the remake of ghostbusters.

When I heard they were remaking the Karate Kid I just thought “why?”.

Films are unique moments that take you back - ghostbusters- yeah great in its day but who could remake a Bill Murray film (he made a cameo but you know what I mean) with a completely different cast and expect the same result?

Each time I go to Bedd - au........................
