Labour overturn huge majorities to win both by elections 06:25 - Oct 20 with 3199 viewsbuilthjack

Just WOW.
The CON people had held the one since 1931.
Their will be some wet porridge in Felixtowe and Wirral this morning with all those tears dripping into it.

Her and the word celebrity are worlds apart, you got to wonder what Boris saw in her

I guess many a party youth wing member had a wet dream about her, especially when she was in her prime a few years back?

Most Labour voters did turn up. As many as usually do in a General election. Very few of the Tories did. Which is why they lost. That is unlikely to happen in a GE.

That's the point. That is why Starmer will be taking nothing for granted.

This is why you can never judge anything by mid term election results. I'm shure labour will win but not by Thursdays swing. For me it will come down to if they have an overall majority or not.

Poll: As things stand are you going to vote in the General Election

The what if’s…. the maybe’s….. and maybe not’s? The next general election????

What if Labour is so ahead in the polls that their core support turns out in vastly lesser numbers than expected, and what if there is widespread apathy from many traditional core-support Labour voters in places like the Red Wall? Have Labour won the majority of them back in time?

What if the Tories try to pull a rabbit out of a hat in a last desperate attempt to win back Red Wall voter types and their own core voters by announcing that the party will leave the ECHR?

And would anyone believe them, or trust them anyhow, because of their failure to stop the boats? And add to that the way the U.K’s population still continues to rise beyond sustainable levels. Now that is something that truly worries millions of voters who cannot get a G.P appointment, a dentist, an ambulance or acceptable A+E waiting time.

And have the Tories got any other aces’ left up their sleeves? And even if they did? Maybe it’s way too late in the day anyhow????

And what if Richard Tice/Reform Party keeps today’s/yesterday’s promise to stand in every U.K constituency and steals thousands of votes from the Tories in every contested seat at the next general election? Could the Reform Party become THE party of protest?

Could that mean a never-seen-before devastating electoral wipeout for the Tories? Maybe the next election run-up could be more exciting than expected?

That's just guesswork. you, or I, haven't a clue who turned up and who didn't. All we know about is the ones who did turn up.

So we haven't got a clue who turned up but all we know about is the one's who did turn up?

Hmmm.

My best guess would be those that voted turned up and more labour than tory tuned up. Even though those nmbers are lower than in previous years.

The figures are easily checkable online.

In the 2019 General Election in mid-Befordshire 14,028 people voted for Labour whilst 38,692 voted Conservative. In the recent by-election, 13,872 voted Labour whilst 12,680 voted Conservative. More than 25,000 people who previously voted Conservative didn't vote at all.

20,000 Conservative voters disappeared in Tamworth. There isn't an equivalent increase in the votes received by other candidates.

So yes, we do have a clue who turned up and who didn't.

Not necessarily.
Of the 13,872 who voted Labour this time, maybe only half of them voted Labour last time.
The other half could be Tories who voted Labour this time around pad. Now that wouldn’t surprise me given what’s gone on in Westminster.
So no, we haven’t a clue really.

So 6,000 people who voted for Labour under Corbyn in 2019 decided not to vote against the Tories this time?

Have a word mun.

Sit down. Think.
You are saying that every Labour voter turned up again.
But 25000 Tory voters couldn’t be bothered.
Right. Laughable.

Apathy reigns supreme. I think people are finally cottoning on to the fact that a vote for any party is essentially a vote for the same thing.

Yep, it's the illusion of a democracy. No-one gets to vote for those who are truly in power

This isn't a "mid term" result though. We are most likely less than a year away from a General Election.

Are you really trying to argue that Labour only won Mid Beds because all the existing Labour voters in the constituency turned up and all the tories just stayed at home?

Do you not think that there may have been people who switched their vote? Can you not see how Tories staying home is also very, very bad news for them?

Historically Tories have never turned out for by elections, it will be a lot closer come the general election.

But if Labour don't win the next election, they will be in the wilderness for years to come, at least they have learned the lesson of Corbyn.

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

The Tiries will be blown to smithereens.
But they may learn the lesson of Cameron / May / Liar Johnson / 30 billion Truss / and Slippery Sunak.

Corbyn cost Labour big time of that there is no doubt.

If Ed Milliband hadn't ruined his brothers chance of the Labour leadership, we might not have had to put up with the Tories you mention

And if Tories had not lost Rory Stewart and Ruth Davidson they would not be as pitiful as there are right now.
To think Johnson and Truss were made PM has killed them stone dead
