Anyone old enough to remember Stan Bowles in the bookies before games 10:11 - Apr 12 with 3105 views | numptydumpty | Was just thinking as read that Stan used to have a last minute bet on races half hour before the games. Was this actually true ??? As can't understand that he would not have been mobbed by fans whilst doing this. Yes i know it's a different era and maybe all just left him to it. As I know from living in Portsmouth in the late 80s and early 90s, Alan Ball was Portsmouth manager back then and I was often in the bookies when he would randomly pop in watch his race, screw up his betting slip and come back in another day and everyone left him alone. It wasn't done on match days though. Was just wondering those that are old enough, do they remember Stan being in the bookies before the game and was he left to his viewing pleasures on his own or did the fans circle around him.. If these things happened today, I reckon people would be after selfies , a chat and God knows what !!! Different times...

Anyone old enough to remember Stan Bowles in the bookies before games on 20:37 - Apr 12 with 2511 views | stainrods_elbow | Rather bizarrely, Shanks is now apparently managing a fourth division Egyptian side at the age of 72 - his first management job in football! Anyone know what the story is there?

Other famous people that went in there were the cast of Z Cars, whose rehearsal place was thereabouts.

I was with my lad for an evening game and Stan was In the Smuts (Bloemfontein Road) with a couple of likely lads, I said to him If I bought him a pint would he sign a limited edition painting of him, he said of course he would. I ran up to the club shop bought the painting ran back to the pub and he duly signed It, I've got Two signed pictures of Stan hanging on the wall In my Man cave. They don't make them like that anymore.

I will have a look at that Ted I followed QPR from 1974 but was a very young boy in Stans time. So unfortunately slightly before my time for the memory banks. Sure it's an interesting read Times change so much It's difficult to predict how it could be in another 50 years. Probably watching robots play the game....

But what a player - such memories.......
Anyone old enough to remember Stan Bowles in the bookies before games on 16:24 - Apr 13 with 1792 views | thehat | My late Dad told me he saw Stan coming out of the bookies on SAR at 2.20pm in his tracksuit while the other players were on the pitch warming up. He played that day scored and was MOTM. Can you imagine that happening today. They don’t make them like that anymore.

Anyone old enough to remember Stan Bowles in the bookies before games on 12:08 - Apr 15 with 1107 views | Noelmc | I worked on the Tote at White City Stadium during 1978-79 for the greyhound racing and Stan was a regular visitor. Will always remember he turned up one night 10 minutes before the last race at 10pm following an away game at Maine Rd. I figure he must have run straight from the coach drop-off to get there in time for the last race and it was worthwhile as he ended up winning £100+. [Post edited 15 Apr 16:54]

We used to stand with Don's brother Ian in the loft in the 80s. He is still a regular as I have seen him on Facebook.

Which of his clubs was it which eventually started sending his wages straight to his missus, otherwise she might never see any of it?

That started at Rangers, don't remember what year but they gave the big end of the pay packet to Anne.
